With several points races still up for grabs entering week 16 of Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags, the drag racing promised to be intense and dramatic all night long. The build-up did not disappoint, as each pass down the pit lane drag strip helped determine the overall points champion for the season.
The drama started early on for the Super Pro division, as practice runs at the start of the evening played a major role in the night’s activities. Points leader Mark White of McDonough entered the night two points ahead in the standings, but suffered a mechanical failure in practice that precluded him from competing in elimination rounds. That opened the door for second place Mike Herring of Conyers, who clinched the championship in the second round of racing and went on to claim the victory, his second of the year.
The Pro division also entered the night as another close battle, as McDonough’s David Craft held a three point lead over Fayetteville resident David Sisk. Craft defeated Sisk in early round competition, awarding him the championship. Craft would not stop there, gaining for a clean sweep of the evening’s action by topping Jonesboro’s Billy Clevenger in the final round. It was Craft’s fifth win of the season, all in consecutive events.
And while he couldn’t bring home the championship, Stockbridge’s Chuck Poole backed up his runner-up finish in the season standings with a final round win over the season champion, McDonough resident Will Coots. Poole claimed his third win of the year by beating Coots to the finish line.
The 2012 Friday Night Drags points champions include: Mike Herring of Conyers (Super Pro), David Craft of McDonough (Pro), Daryl Stiles of Williamson (Street Outlaw), Vic Vickers of McDonough (Sportsman), Will Coots of McDonough (Truck Advanced), Dwayne Bethune of Covington (Diesel Truck), Allen Gaddis of Molina (Truck), Terry Bates of Locust Grove (Domestic Advanced), Kelly Morgan of Jonesboro (Domestic), Bobby Bramblett of Loganville (Tuner), Lamar Chambers of Griffin (Sport Compact), Justin Wooten of Zebulon (ATV), Toney Freeman of Stockbridge (Super Bike), Joshua Jones of Riverdale (Sport Bike), AJ White of Riverdale (Street Motorcycle), Jacob Turner of Griffin (Cruiser/Dirt Bike) and Kyle Cumpton of Snellville (Street Modified).
