For young Spencer Davis, Saturday night’s Larry Fleeman Memorial at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, GA was double the pleasure.
After winning the truck feature earlier in the evening, Davis topped off the night by winning the 100-lap Pro Late Model feature, picking up his second straight PLM feature at the venerable half-mile track.
“I’m real satisfied with the effort,” said Davis in victory lane. “We had a real good race car all day.”
On the drop of the green flag, Russell Fleeman charged to the lead, with Hunter Robbins in second and Davis in third.
Two laps later, Robbins would charge to the lead, with Davis in second. T.J. Reaid ran fourth.
As the race went on David would look for daylight around Robbins again and again, but was unable to get the opening he needed. Meanwhile, Fleeman appeared to be stalking the leaders, biding his time.
Davis got the opening he needed around the half way point, as he and Robbins made contact while running side-by-side. Davis would move by and into the lead, pulling out to a sizeable lead over the field.
Fleeman continued to pace himself, but with 25 laps to go, he suddenly fell off the pace, the victim of engine failure.
Davis would power his way on to score the win in a race that went flag-to-flag without a caution. Anderson Bowen finished second, with Colt James in third, T.J. Reaid in fourth, and Robbins in fifth.
“It was a real hard battle,” Davis said of his on-track fight with Robbins. “He got me loose the first time I passed him and I gave him two more shots. I had to go because Russell was coming.”
Earlier in the evening, Davis picked up the win in the Truck feature.
Kevin Vasser jumped out front early, with Emilee Riley in second, and Matt Vasser in third.
The caution flew on lap two, when Matt Vasser hooked Riley off of turn two, sending Riley’s truck backwards into the wall.
After the second caution of the night flew on lap 5 for debris, Davis charged t the lead on a three-wide restart, with Conrad Compton moving to second and Kevin Vasser in third.
From there, Davis ran away from the field to pick up the victory. Compton finished second, with Kevin Vasser third, Matt Vasser in fourth, and Ronnie Weahunt in fifth.
We finally got the truck back working,” Davis said in victory lane.
In Outlaw Late Model action, Russell Fleeman powered to the lead on the second lap, holding off Jason Bates to pick up the victory. Matthew Wragg finished third, with David Murphy in fourth, and Mike Davidson in fifth.
“I got a lot of emotions running heavy,” said Fleeman, whose father, Larry Fleeman, was being honored on the night. “We got this one and I hope we can get the next one. This is all for you, dad.”
The Sportsman/Renegade feature was only four laps old when contact between Robert Hubbard and Mike Childers in the second turn left Childers’ car on its side, and on top of Hubbard’s car. That lead to a 50 minute red flag to allow for track clean up.
With the feature’s time limit having been well exceeded, officials decided to give the competitors a green-white-checkered finish.
Sportsman leader Jeff Chadwick jumped the restart, and was black flagged by race officials. That handed the win to Jackie Daniel, who has won several times this season at GMP.
“He jump started way back there,” Daniel said. “He messed himself out of the whole race… He ran off and left me.”
Meanwhile, in the Renegade portion of the feature, it was Nathaniel “Boo” Carlisle scoring the win.
“It’s indescribable,” said Carlisle. “We worked so hard. To me, it’s just the same as a late model win.”
In Mini-Stock action, it appeared that Scotty Beck had all his bad luck behind him as he held command of the feature. But Beck suddenly lost power just after halfway, handing the lead to Aaron Calvert. Calvert would go on to win, with Trace Embry in second, Avery Burgess in third, Allen Cantrel in fourth, and Zack Minnielly in fifth.
“I saw him get a little loose,” said Calvert. “I just wanted to race him clean. I feel like we had the best car and could get by him, but I wanted to do it cleanly. I knew he had some problems and I hate that. I wished I could have raced him for it, but it is what it is.”
All results are unofficial until certified by race officials.
Action returns to Gresham Motorsports Park on Sept. 15, as the ARCA/CRA Super Series hits the Jefferson high banks. Visit www.racegmp.com for more info.
