With double points looming next week at Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags, the racing action in week 12 was billed to be as intense as it had been at any point in the season, and it did not disappoint. New winners, repeat victors and some family competition highlighted the evening’s action on the eighth-mile pit lane drag strip at AMS.
In Super Pro action, the fastest division at Friday Night Drags did not see a repeat winner, as John Bonner defeated Mike Herring’s “Batmobile” in the final round. Herring entered the night looking to gain ground in the standings and log his second straight win. Instead, it was Bonner who returned to victory lane for the second time this season and inched closer to points leader Mark White in the standings.
Jason Thomas rebounded nicely in the Street Outlaw division after last week’s disappointing result to log another 2012 win, his third of the year. “Mighty Mouse” defeated points leader Daryl Stiles’ 1968 Chevrolet Camaro in final round action, moving Thomas within one point of the lead in the points standings.
Will Coots would continue his recent hot streak in Truck Advanced competition and get back to his winning ways, earning his fifth trophy this year. Coots used the night to put some distance in the points standings between himself and fellow competitors Chuck Poole and Andrew Pride.
Arguably the highlight of the night turned out to be a couple of families battling it out head-to-head for trophies and household bragging rights, with youth prevailing in each race. In the Tuner division, Chase Ponder defeated father Vince, both piloting Mitsubishi Eclipse GSXs. Chase knows how to get around Atlanta Motor Speedway, as he has previously won multiple Bandolero championships in the speedway’s Thursday Thunder racing series. It was Chase’s third win in drag racing competition this summer.
Following the Tuner battle, the boys of the Truck division turned up the wick, putting on a battle for the fans to enjoy and one that they will remember. Buddy Patrick, driving the 1944 Willy’s Panel Wagon “Milk Truck” that his father piloted before him, went toe-to-toe with his dad, Mike, who was also wheeling a flat black Willy’s truck in its AMS debut.
The battle went right down to the wire, with Buddy squeezing out Mike at the line. Buddy put the wraps on his fourth win in 2012, but much more was being battled for than a trophy. Prior to the final round, the two Patrick boys put some pride on the line, declaring that the loser of the race would don a pink camisole for the crowd following the race. Mike held up his end of the bargain, squeezing into the garment for a family victory lane photo.
Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags returns July 27 with week 13 of drag racing action on the eighth-mile pit lane drag strip, where double points will be on the line for drag racers. More information can be found at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com/
