Fans were treated to an action-packed night of racing on Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Thunder Ring on July 19. Thursday Thunder competitors drove in two feature races during the night’s event in the only double points night of the season.
The racing was close as only two competitors were able to win both of their feature races. The evening also featured two racers who scored their first wins of the summer.Hub Talbot was out front for the start of the Semi-Pro feature, kicking off the first round of feature races. William Plemons III was the leader by the time the field completed the first lap. Justin Thomas ran Plemons down by lap four and passed him on lap five. Plemons fought back to take the lead on lap eight, but then Thomas charged again to the front to become the race leader. Thomas snatched his third Thursday Thunder win in 2012.
The Shane’s Rib Shack Young Lions feature launched with Trevin Aswarnauth on the pole. On lap one, Kaz Grala surged to the lead and he dominated the entire race. However, Alex Coffey made the pass for the top spot on the final lap to steal the win, his first of the season.
Austin Geer took the green flag to set off Racing Radios Bandits feature. On the first lap in the first turn a multi-car crash ensued in which Connor Younginer barred-rolled several times off the track and the accident also involved Austin Geer and Ashton Winger. Fortunately, all drivers walked away unhurt from the wreckage.
On the restart, Reid Morris was in first-place, but Zach Leonhardi took the lead one lap later. Points leader Chandler Smith was hunting Leonhardi down lap after lap, but on lap 12, Leonhardi got loose coming off of turn two, which caused Smith and third-place Joshua Hicks to make contact. Both Smith and Hicks were sent to the rear for the restart for the on-track contact and Leonhardi restarted in first. Despite Smith and Hicks making a run from the back to second- and third-place, Leonhardi secured the win. It was his first win of the summer series.
The Pro and Masters classes ran in a combined feature with Jeff Haynie as the pole sitter and Brian Weimer as the top Masters competitor. Points leader Mason Massey passed Haynie on lap two to assume the lead. On the final turn, Scott Mosley (substitute driving for Terry Mathis) snuck past Weimer to grab the Masters win. Massey logged his sixth Pro feature win of the summer.
Tyler Mosley paced the field to the green flag for the Outlaws feature. Tyler Lester raced his way to the front by the completion of lap one. Points leader Taylor Jorgensen fought her way from the eighth starting spot to the front by lap seven. Taylor led the remainder of the laps to collect her seventh win in eight starts this summer.
The second round of features kicked off with Aaron Bailey as the pole sitter in the Semi-Pro feature. Jay Coen was out front after the completion of lap one. Justin Thomas maneuvered his way to the top spot one lap later after starting in the seventh position. Coming off turn four with three laps to go, points leader Myatt Snider got a nose to the inside of Thomas. Thomas took the lead back one lap later, but Snider didn’t give up as it was a drag race to the finish with Snider taking home the trophy; his second of the series.
The Shane’s Rib Shack Young Lions started with Riley Thornton as the leader. Thornton was challenged several times during the race by both points leader Evan Bell and Joey Padgett, but Thornton was able to fend them off. Bell stayed glued to Thornton’s bumper lap after lap, but was unable to get by as Thornton led every lap to capture his third win of the 2012 Thursday Thunder campaign.
Lee Hodges paced the field to the start for the Racing Radios Bandits feature. Ashton Winger worked his way to the front after the completion of the first circuit. Leonhardi snuck past Winger in the first turn on lap five. Leonhardi led lap after lap even with Chandler Smith hot on his heels. The pressure may have gotten to Leonhardi as with two laps to go, Leonhardi made contact with the backstretch wall, bringing out the caution and handing the top spot over to Smith. Smith held on to seize the win, his fourth of the summer and continues to lead the points standings.
The Outlaws feature opened with Alton Clark pacing the field to the green flag. Christopher Clanton found his way to the front by lap two, but he didn’t hold it for long as points leader Taylor Jorgensen shot her way to the front after starting in the last spot. She once again showed her strength leading the remainder of the laps to post the win and becoming the first driver of the night to win both feature races.
The combined Pro and Masters feature kicked off with Jeff Haynie out front and Skip Nichols the top Masters racer. Mason Massey snuck by Haynie to assume the lead early in the race. Despite some great on-track challenges, Massey and Nichols were able to score the wins for their respective divisions. Massey was only the second driver of the night to win both feature races.
Short-track racing returns to Atlanta Motor Speedway Thursday, July 26 for the final night of the 2012 10-event series of Thursday Thunder, where the series championship titles will be determined. The night will also feature the Back to School Bash where six Henry County school principals will race cars for bragging rights as the fastest principal.
