Greg Fore of Greenville, MS used his home track knowledge to hit the high side of the track and win the Delta Dirt Nationals 50 on Saturday night for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS driving the Pesqualies Pizza Special.
Fore took the lead on lap 28 and then held off a late-race charge from two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Champion David Earl Gentry of Murfreesboro, TN, who started 14th in the Eads Farms/Hardy & Associates Warrior, to take the $2,500 victory.
“Racing here every week, I knew the outside groove would be the place to be in the second half of the race,” Fore said. “When I saw Duke Palasini go up there and go to the front, I knew that’s where I needed to be. I hate it he had problems after he took the lead, but it cleared the way for me to get here in the winner’s circle.”
Fore had Gentry right on his back bumper for the last ten laps of the race, but the only place for Gentry to go to make a challenge for the lead was inside Fore, who was right up against the wall around the ¼-mile black gumbo clay oval. Gentry made a couple of attempts to dive to the inside going into the corners, but Fore had too much momentum for Gentry to take the lead.
Fore had a margin of victory of .295 seconds over Gentry. Pole sitter Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS led the race on two different occasions, but had to settle for the third spot in the Bassett Hound Motorsports GRT. Chase Washington of Houlka, MS made a late-race charge in the Jerry Inmon Racing Special to take the fourth spot.
NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point leader Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA finished fifth in the Hedman Husler Special, and now has an 18-point lead over Gentry in the battle for the $20,000 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS Championship. Larry Harrod of Plains, GA drove the Harrod Logging Special to a sixth-place finish to remain third in the point standings.
Bo Gordon of Merigold, MS was seventh in the Redden Farms Rocket, but was a big winner, as he donated his two-race earnings of $1,500 to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, who set a new “Ride For Life” record of over $13,000 raised through driver ride auctions in the series’ two-seat dirt late model and raffle ticket sales.
Ashley Newman of Ripley, TN started 22nd in the TS Race Shop GRT and finished eighth to earn the Hedman Husler of the Race Award. Tait Davenport of Benton, KY took the ninth spot in the Murtco, Inc. Special, and Chris Cantrell of Chester, SC rounded out the top ten in the CANCO Rocket and was the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Race.
In preliminary action, Stokes out-qualified the 34-car field during time trials with a lap in 14.987 seconds to earn the pole position for the main event. The two 12-lap B-Main races were won by Turner and Todd Morrow of East Ridge, TN in the A-Plus Collision Center GRT.
Stokes took the lead at the drop of the green flag to start the race followed by Harrod, Cantrell, Duke Palasini of Leland, MS in the Palasini Farms Special, and Fore. Cantrell got by Harrod for the second spot on lap three with an inside move down the front straightaway.
Lamar Furr of Hollandale, MS spun the Furr Racing GRT down the backstretch on lap four to bring out the first of eight caution flags. On the restart, Palasini drove under Harrod for the third spot, and Mike Palasini Jr. of Leland, MS in the MP Trucking Trak-Star pulled up alongside Harrod to challenge for the fourth position on lap five.
Harrod and Mike Palasini raced side-by-side for fourth for two laps and then Palasini took the spot on lap seven. Turner was an early race hard charger, as he came from his 11th starting spot to seventh by lap nine.
Eric Carr of Bruce, MS spun the Carr Land and Timber Special down the front stretch on lap 13 to bring out the second caution flag. Stokes led Cantrell, Duke Palasini, Mike Palasini Jr., Harrod, Fore, Turner, Chase Edge of Lafayette, AL in the Edge’s Gas Company Special, Gentry and Gordon down for the double-file restart.
Duke Palasini moved up to challenge Cantrell for the second spot on lap 14 by going to the outside, and taking the spot going down the backstretch. Palasini wasn’t quite finished with his high-riding charge, and he sailed on around Stokes to take the lead on lap 16.
Palasini’s reign as the race leader didn’t last long, as he suddenly slowed off the pace in turn one on lap 18, after the driveshaft exited from underneath his race car. That brought out the third caution flag of the race and gave Palasini the Dominator Race Products Hard Luck Award. Stokes reassumed the lead for the restart followed by Cantrell, Harrod, Mike Palasini Jr, and Fore.
Cantrell took to the inside of Stokes on the restart, and on lap 19, Cantrell made his way around the leader to take the point. Fore began his outside move to the front of the pack also on lap 19 when he drove around Mike Palasini Jr. for the fourth spot. Harrod was able to get underneath Stokes to take the second spot in turn one on lap 21.
Michael Blount of Sumrall, MS spun the Lamar Auto Salvage GRT in turn four on lap 23 to light up the caution bulb for the fourth time. When Cantrell led the doubled-up field behind him for the restart, they broke out four-wide for the second spot in turn two. After some contact, Harrod pulled up with a cut down right-front tire that brought out caution flag number five.
With Harrod giving up the second spot to pit for a new tire, Stokes was back in the second spot behind Cantrell, with Fore moving up to third. Fore sailed around the outside of Stokes to take over the second spot on lap 24, and then wasted no time catching Cantrell to battle for the lead, and taking the point down the backstretch on lap 28.
Just after Fore took the lead, the red flag was displayed after Furr flipped over the turn one wall on lap 29. Furr was uninjured after the wild ride. Fore led Cantrell, Stokes, Gentry, Gordon, Mike Palasini Jr., Mark Tice of Avon, MS in the Precision Marine Special, Edge, Washington, and Brent Barrett of Cleveland, MS in the Custom Spraying GRT down for the restart.
Cantrell lost the handle on his race car when the green flag came out, as Stokes drove around him for the second spot, and Gentry moved up to third on lap 30. Gentry then went to inside of Stokes on lap 32 to wage war for the second spot. Gentry got by Stokes to take the position on lap 36, and then set his sights on Fore trying to double up after winning the Friday night race.

Tice fell out of the top ten when he stalled on the backstretch on lap 37 to bring out the seventh caution flag. The top five for the restart were Fore, Gentry, Stokes, Mike Palasini Jr., and Washington. Palasini sailed around outside of Stokes to take the third spot, but he got too high in turn four on lap 41 and hit the wall to bring out the final caution flag.
In the ten lap dash to the finish, Fore hugged the outside wall, as Gentry made several attempts to dive to the inside to make a pass for the lead, but was unsuccessful, Washington challenged Stokes for the third spot, and Turner got by Gordon to take over fifth on the restart. Fore held off Gentry for the victory, and Stokes edged Washington for the third spot at the checkered flag.
The next two events on the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring schedule will be the $5,000-to-win 7th Annual Coke Zero 75 at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS on August 31 and September 1, followed by a $2,000-to-win 40-lap event at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS on September 2.
