LaGrange’s Tod Darda and Stockbridge’s Jeff Carter have been absent from the Senoia Raceway line-up for the past few weeks, but the duo showed no signs of rust Saturday night. Carter and Darda returned to the winner’s circle at the Senoia, GA track, leading flag to flag in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models and the Newnan Bonding B Cadets.
Joining Carter and Darda were Carrollton’s Clifton Moran, who won the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock feature for the 13th time this season. Newnan’s Brandon Bright won for the sixth time in the Mini Stock class while Newnan’s Jay Conner notched his fourth victory of the year for the Bombers.
“It seems everybody except Dusty Jones is scared they can’t beat old Hog Head,” said long time race fan Carl Sammons of Newnan, speaking about Hobby Stock guru Clifton Moran. “Sherrer quit. Duke quit. Parker gave up. They can’t beat him. He can drive a race car.”
Moran pressured Dusty Jones through the first seven laps of the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock and similar to last weekend waited patiently for the 18-year-old rookie to make a small mistake. That mistake came around the eighth lap when Jones’ car got loose in the fourth turn and spun.
Jones did chase down Moran over the final dozen laps of the feature, but could not get around the hard charging veteran. Douglasville’s Kip Stanfill finished third ahead of Griffin’s Chad Foster and Brooks’ Kerry ‘Hop’ Carden.
“Dusty is a great driver,” said Moran afterwards. “He is tough, good competition. It’s not easy with drivers like Dusty running.”
Tod Darda made it look easy as he qualified the fastest in time trials and then led flag to flag over Phenix City, Alabama’s Russ Ogletree to win the 25-lap main event for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models. Stockbridge’s Trey White finished third after a hard fought battle with Thomaston’s Shane Fulcher. Current points leader, Racin’ Jason Williams of Locust Grove, rounded out the first five finishers for the high powered division.
The story was the same in the Newnan Bonding B Cadet feature was won in dominating fashion by Stockbridge’s Jeff Carter. The defending champion shot out to the lead at the drop of the green and led every lap en route to his second win of the season. Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland finished as runner-up followed by Opelika, Alabama’s Kelly Leonard in third. Leonard had started at the rear of the field, but methodically moved up the position chart with well thought and calculated moves.
“The B Cadet racing has been some of the best,” said Senoia Raceway promoter Tim Moses. “Next Saturday’s special event for the division should be a fantastic show. There are several drivers that could win the double purse money.”
Newnan’s Brandon Bright returned from a blown engine the week prior to overtake the 2011 Mini Stock champion Gary Parker of Barnesville on lap seven. Bright then would hold back the final efforts of Parker and his father Dorough Bright to nab the four cylinder stock car victory. Newnan’s Bobby Arnold and Douglasville’s Rocky Johnson completed the first five finishers.
Alabama’s Thomas Scroggins and Chris Storey challenged Newnan’s Jay Conner for the checkered flag in the Bomber division. The three time winner slipped by Scroggins after he spun in turn four and then held off Storey for the win. Bomber point’s leader David Johnson of Griffin was third followed by the ‘Riverdale Rocket’ Mike Ray and Barnesville’s Marcus Snead.
“I like that eleven car (Scroggins),” said Conner in victory lane. “I want the competition. Come on back and give it another try.”
This Saturday, July 28, Senoia Raceway hosts the ‘Dog Days of Summer’ special event featuring a 30-lap big race for the Newnan Bonding B Cadets paying twice the money to win. There will also be a full night of competition in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Bombers.
