Ward’s Finesse Earns Him Win At Bowman Gray Stadium

A combination of heat, humidity, and summer rain storms left the track slick at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, NC on Saturday. It led to a few wrecks and some sliding through the turns – and it played right into Dean Ward’s hands.

Ward, a resident of Winston-Salem, claimed the checkered for the 100-lapper for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series on Saturday – his third victory of the season.

“It’s really fun when the track is like this. It takes horsepower away. It takes some of your handling away. It’s how you finesse the car.”

The starting lineup for the 100-lap race was determined by random draw, with Tony Black of Lexington drawing the pole. It was a great position for a rookie racer to be in – except for his surrounding competitors: veteran Junior Miller of Danbury was starting on the outside front row.

Black leaped out into the lead at the initial start but was immediately pressured by Miller. The #69 of Miller delivered tap after tap to the rear bumper of Black, turning Black sideways. But the rookie held his own and maintained the lead.

A particularly stout bump from Miller not only caused Black to slide a little but also caused Miller to fall slightly off the pace. Dean Ward saw his opportunity and darted to the inside to take over second.

Ward then applied the pressure to Black, nudging his bumper and trying to force the rookie to make a mistake. Black held on for lap after lap – until Ward was able to steal the lead away on lap 32.

But it was far from over for Ward. He then had to deal with repeated outside row challenges from Junior Miller during double-file restarts. Six times Miller took the outside – and six times Ward defended his lead.

“We had our car setup to go inside, but we just had to run as hard as we can with what we had,” said Miller about his inability to capitalize from the outside.

The win was Ward’s third victory this season. Miller finished in second, with Tim Brown of Rural Hall finishing in third.

In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Kenny Bost of Lexington brought home the win in the first race. John Lain of Kernersville and Zack Clifton of Walkertown finished in second and third. Michael Adams of Yadkinville claimed victory in the second race. Jeff Garrison followed behind in second, with Zack Clifton of Walkertown finishing third yet again.

Darren Cotner of King bumped Brian Wall of Winston-Salem out of the lead, grabbing the win for himself in the 20-lapper for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. Billy Gregg of Lexington and K.J. Stimpson of Lewisville finished in second and third.

In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, A.J. Sanders of Mocksville and Shane Tuttle of Winston-Salem each won a 15-lapper on Saturday.

Action returns to Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday, July 21, with the Sheetz Night of Destruction, including monster truck car crushing and a demolition derby, along with racing from the Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium stock divisions.  Visit www.bowmangrayracing.com for more info.
