Spencer Davis Scores First Late Model Win At Gresham

Wednesday night was a big night for Spencer Davis, as the young Dawsonville, Georgia driver scored his first ever late model victory in the JEGS Pro Late Model 50 at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, GA.

Davis made his way past veteran driver Michael Lance, and pulled away to score the victory.

Lance jumped out front early on the start, with Davis giving chase.

The only caution of the night flew on lap two, involving Kyle Weatherman and Dale Tomazin.  R.S. Senter was gathered up as well.

On the restart, Lance would again jump out front, with Spencer in second.  Meanwhile, Donald McIntosh, Russell Fleeman, Max Gresham, and Kyle Plott were all on the move.  As the laps wound down, Fleeman, McIntosh, and Gresham would work their way into the top five.

Lap after lap, Davis worked to find daylight around Lance.  A slip by Lance off the fourth turn opened the door for Davis, and he worked his way around for the lead.  That’s right where he would stay the rest of the night, as he scored the win.  Lance finished second.  Fleeman was flagged as the third place finisher, with Gresham in fourth.

But the race didn’t end there, as the cars of Max Gresham, owned by Ronnie Sanders, and Russell Fleeman, owned by Fleeman Racing, were disqualified due to illegal rocker arm ratio.  Track officials stated that in both cases, neither the drivers, the team owners, nor the team members were responsible, but said rather the blame lies with the engine manufacturer.

That moved Donald McIntosh, in just his fourth asphalt late model start, to third, with Eric Wallace and Cody Coughlin rounding out the top five.

In other action, one of the most exciting events of the night came in the Sportsman feature, as Jackie Daniel and Brian Sosebee did battle for the win.  On a late restart, Sosebee challenged Daniel on the outside, looking for a chance to pull away with the lead.  But the two made contact, sending Sosebee spinning down the backstretch.

On the restart, Sosebee again challenged, this time making the car stick.  But one lap later, Sosebee would slide too high, getting into the marbles and sending his car spinning again.  With two laps to go, Sosebee would challenge again on the restart, but it was Daniel coming away with the victory.

Meanwhile, Robert Hubbard scored the win in the Renegade feature, which was run at the same time.  Mike Childers finished second, with Marty Martin third.

In the Mini-Stock feature, Scotty Beck has found several ways to lose features this year.  But Wednesday night, he got the monkey off his back, as he held off a hard charge from Spanky Hicks to pick up the victory, his first since 2011.  Vernon Hicks finished third, with Aaron Calvert fourth, and Avery Burgess in fifth.

In the Truck feature, Cody Haskins checked out and walked away from the field, picking up his fourth feature victory of the season.  Alexander Fox, Matt Vasser, Kevin Vasser, and Emilee Riley rounded out the top five.

In Outlaw Late Models, Jason Bates managed to avoid being collected in a hard crash by Matthew Wragg on the front stretch, and then chased down Mike Davidson to score the victory.  David Murphy, Terry Martin, and B.J. Fisher rounded out the top five.

All results are unofficial until certified by race officials.

Action returns to Gresham Motorsports Park on August 11, as the track will host the Larry Fleeman Memorial, featuring a 100 lap event for the Pro Late Models, plus local racing from the Outlaw Late Models, Trucks, Sportsman/Renegades, and Mini-Stocks.  Visit www.racegmp.com for more info.
