Crawley Beats Field, Rain For USCS Win At Dixie

Tim Crawley nearly had a perfect evening. The USCS Sprint Car regular won the series’ $100 dash to kick off the night at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA. He ended his evening in the same fashion, collecting the victory in the 30-lap feature as well.

Crawley took over the lead at the halfway point and survived charges from Derek Hagor and Anthony Nicholson on a late-race restart to earn the win. Hagor held off Nicholson for second, while Terry Gray and Matt Linder rounded out the top five.

“This was a fun race,” Crawley said in victory lane. “One of my sponsors showed up and surprised us. I’m glad he was here to see it.”

The only blemish on Crawley’s evening was his heat race – Hagor bested him by a half car length. But Crawley had the last laugh.

Hagor jumped out to an early lead in the feature as well, but he could never outrun Crawley’s shadow. On lap 15, Crawley pounced, jumping to the outside lane off turn 4 and overtaking Hagor in turn 1.

From there, the closest race was between the cars on the track and the thunderstorms in the rapidly-closing distance. About five minutes after the checkered flag flew, the skies opened up.

The rain washed the Limited, Crate and Super Late Models, Cruisers and Pony Car features away. But the track did squeeze the main events four classes in before the storms came.

Only one caution slowed the 20-lap Mini Sprints feature, but nothing could slow down  Bobby Zaiontz. He went wire-to-wire, cruising to a half-straightaway victory. Bob Trapino held off Chris Openshaw for second as Zaiontz left them in his wake.

In similar fashion, Roy Patterson led every lap in the 15-lap Super Bomber feature, a race that was also slowed by only one caution. Kenny Taylor stayed within striking distance but couldn’t get any closer than five car lengths. He settled for second, with Ted Ninnix, Kirt Atkins and Timmy Millwood making up the top five.

In the Econo Bomber feature, John Binger led the lion’s share of the 15 laps and saw the white flag from the top spot. But Justin Shipley jumped to his outside on the final lap off turn 2 and pulled even down the backstretch.

Shipley carried the momentum off turn 4 and edged Binger at the finish line by half of a car length. Shane Smith followed in third, with Kyle Beavers and Tom Darby rounding out the top five.

“I didn’t think I was going to get around him,” Shipley said. I wish I could say I planned it like that, but it was just luck.”
