The fifth event in the 2012 Thursday Thunder season featured the annual fan-favorite Faster Pastor race along with a couple of first-time winners on the quarter-mile “Thunder Ring.”
The combined Pro and Masters feature got underway with Jeff Haynie in the lead for the Pros and Ed Clark for the Masters. By lap five, points leader Mason Massey made it to the front to seize the race lead. Massey led the remainder of the race to snatch the win, his fifth in five starts. Clark ran a perfect race, out front for every circuit to post the Masters feature win, his second this Thursday Thunder season.
The Semi-Pro feature launched with Myatt Snider on the pole. The caution flag was thrown on lap eight for a spin in turn two involving Garrett Smithley and points leader William Plemons III. Plemons raced his way all the way up to the second position, but was unable to catch Snider who led every circuit to claim in first Thursday Thunder trophy.
Will Fagan took the green flag to set off the Shane’s Rib Shack Young Lions feature. The race was lengthy due to several caution periods, however Fagan was the leader for every lap, capturing his first ever Thursday Thunder victory. Since Fagan’s car is red, fans can get fifty percent off online orders with the code 50RED at participating Papa John’s Pizza locations all weekend long.
The Outlaws feature started with Christopher Clanton as the leader. By lap five, points leader Taylor Jorgensen made it up to the front to make the pass for the top spot. Taylor and Clanton swapped the lead back and forth for several laps, with Taylor staking her claim as the leader. A caution on lap 17 for an incident involving Chase Purdy and Tyler Mosley tightened up the field for a three-lap dash to the finish. Taylor held on to grab the win, her fourth win in five starts this season.
Pastor David Powers from Momentum Church was the pole sitter for the annual Faster Pastor feature as his congregation earned him the top starting spot by donating the most money for their church’s mission trip. Powers took advantage of that top spot and used that “momentum” to collect the title of Atlanta Motor Speedway’s 2012 Faster Pastor. Also participating were Paul Leslie (McDonough Christian), Rhodes Skinner (New Hope Baptist), David Butler (FBC Hampton) and Jorge Gonzalez (FBC Hampton Hispanic Ministry).
The Racing Radios Bandits feature kicked off with Reid Morris out front. By the time the field finished the first circuit, Ashton Winger was out front. Winger held off a hard-charging Zach Leonhardi to log the win, his second this summer.
Zach Privette paced the field to the start for the Buzz Cars feature. By lap six, Brian Sutton raced his way to the front. A debris caution fell on lap 14, tightening the field for a double-file restart. On the restart, Privette got into Sutton left-rear, making him wiggle, but he saved the car and held on to score the win.
