When the first World Crown 300 was planned back in 1983 at what is now known as Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, GA, the idea was to find a mid-November race date that would bring together the best drivers in short track racing for an event wedged between the new All American 400 at the Nashville Fairgrounds and the famed Snowball Derby in Pensacola, FL.
That first race did just that, as an all-star field faced off on Nov. 27, 1983, with Dick Trickle, one of the all time great short track jockeys, topping the field for the win, pocketing a cool $50,000 prize in the process.
For more of the next 28 years, the race would be run in or around the mid to late fall, with the exception of 1987, when it was run on August 30.
But now, the signature event at Gresham Motorsports Park has made its most historic change in history, as the Commerce Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram World Crown 300 will be run this Wednesday, July 4.
The event will headline a day of racing action that will give fans 370 laps of green flag action, as the local Truck division and the Outlaw Late Models will both compete in 35 lap features as well.
Fans will also be treated to an Independence Day fireworks display at the end of the night.
The World Crown will also be returning to its full 300 green flag laps for Super Late Models, while retaining the segmented format first used in 2011. The first segment will run 150 laps, the second 100 laps and the final segment a 50 laps sprint.
The event will pay a total of $20,000 split between the segments, and a guaranteed $1,000 to start.
In 2011, Wisconsin’s Chris Wimmer did what nobody thought was possible by sweeping all three World Crown segments to take home the full $20,000 payday.
One look at the entries going into the final few days before the World Crown shows the depth of talent the field will have.
They include NASCAR Sprint Cup driver David Ragan, NASCAR Camping World Truck series pilot Max Gresham and NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Ryan Blaney. Also set to do battle on the Jefferson high banks is Chase Elliott, who has swept both Late Model events held at GMP this season. Bubba Pollard, hot off a sweep of Super Late Model events on the Gulf Coast last week, is slated to be there, along with Mike Garvey, who is coming into the event off a Pro Late Model victory at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL.
Not to be overlooked are two drivers with a combined five World Crown victories between them. Paul Kelley, the unconditional King of the World Crown, has won four World Crowns, double the number of any other multiple race winner. That includes a win in the first World Crown run on the current GMP layout.
Russell Fleeman, who won the final World Crown on the old Peach State Speedway layout in 2008, is also on tap to look for a second World Crown title.
Other drivers to watch on July 4 include Kenzie Ruston, Kyle Benjamin, Spencer Davis, Dalton Grindle (who will have 1998 World Crown winner Jimmy Garmon working as his crew chief), Augie Grill, T.J. Reaid, Cale Gale, Brady Boswell, and Clay Alexander.
With that much talent, Wednesday night’s World Crown 300 promises to be one of the all time best races in the 29 year history of the event.
