Week eight of Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine, which also stood as the fourth week of points racing on the eighth-mile pit lane drag strip, delivered some new faces to victory lane, which only tightened up the battle for each division’s season points championship.
In the fastest division that Friday Night Drags offers, Super Pro driver Matt Mayben drove his 1972 Chevrolet Nova to victory in the final round, which was his first win of the season. The division was wide open on Friday night, as points leader Mark White did not run due to mechanical issues.
Driving in substitute action for the vehicle’s regular driver, Friday Night Drags veteran Tony Morse got back to a familiar location as he piloted Jason Thomas’ 1967 “Mighty Mouse” Chevrolet Camaro to victory lane with a final round victory over points leader Daryl Stiles. With the points going in Thomas’ name, Morse brings Thomas within two points of Stiles in the season point standings. Morse noted after the victory that he intends to have his Super Pro machine back out on track within the next couple of weeks, adding even more competition in a division that has become completely up for grabs in recent weeks.
Returning to the speedway after not racing last week, points leader Buddy Patrick moved the 1944 Willy’s Milk Truck into the final round, but was upset by Mike Herron of Fayetteville in a 1984 Chevrolet. Patrick will remain the points leader moving into next week’s action, but Herron’s win shows that other drivers have the ability to flex muscle within the division, and each division at Friday Night Drags is up for grabs each night.
One driver on a strong run of good momentum is Will Coots in the Truck Advanced division. Coots built off of last week’s impressive victory by taking another checkered flag over points leader Chuck Poole in the final round. Coots jumps Andrew Pride and moves into second place in the points standings, only one marker behind Poole.
Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine returns June 29 with week nine of drag racing action and the annual Kids’ Candy Scramble prior to drag race eliminations. More information can be found at AtlantaMotorSpeedway.com.
