The Gulf Coast boast the most impressive racing talent roster in all of motorsports and it was on full display across all four classes Saturday night as Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL.

Bubba Pollard passed Donnie Wilson with eight laps to go, and then held him and Kyle Benjamin off on a final restart with four laps to go to win the Miller Lite 100 Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway. In doing so, Pollard became the first repeat winner in the super late model division, and extended his championship lead to 38 points over second-place Mike Garvey.

“I really had to work for this one,” Pollard said. “Donnie had such a good car on the outside and there was really no advantage to running on the bottom. I was thankful to get in front during the restart and hold him off the rest of the way.”

Pollard had a far from dominating car. That honor fell on Garvey and Wilson, who each led 40 laps on the evening. Garvey led from lap 12 to 52, when under caution, suffered a mechanical issue and was forced to retire his car. D.J. VanderLey was the next to fall; suffering a drivetrain issue on lap 54, while running second, that eliminated him from contention.

“We had such a good car before the mechanical failure, which is a shame because it really was a fast car,” VanderLey said. “It’s a part of racing and we’ll go get them next time out.”

Wilson led from lap 52 to 92, where Pollard finally pulled the trigger and passed Wilson at the start/finish line. He completed the pass entering turn 2 and never looked back.

Kyle Benjamin was the fastest qualifier but rolled a 10 during the invert dice roll and was mired in traffic all night. Benjamin was passed by Pollard on lap 41 and followed the veteran’s lead through the field. It earned him his third-consecutive podium in the Miller Lite Series.

“We just got stuck in traffic,” Benjamin said. “Our car had a push all day which was fine in qualifying but works against you in a pack. It’s great to race against guys who will race you clean even when you have a push like we did, and we finished third. Congratulations to Bubba Pollard – he’s such a great driver.”

Lee ‘Red Dog’ Reynolds captured his first feature win of 2012 and did so in dramatic fashion, beating Chad Robinson by a nose in the second-closest finish of the season on Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway.

Reynolds made excellent use of a fifth starting position, got his car out in clean air by lap three, and stuck to the bottom of the track.

Robinson had his four-race winning streak broken on June 16 and was hoping to respond with his fifth win in six races. He pressured Reynolds from the last restart on lap 13 all the way to the finish on lap 20 but couldn’t force the deciding mistake. Robinson finally got a nose under Reynolds on the last turn of the last lap but ‘Red Dog’ pinched him down the front straight to win one of the most exciting finishes of the season.

His championship lead has steadied at 70 over James Patrick but shrunk to 105 over the surging Robinson.

Island Motor II Bombers

Brandon Tipton powered by Wesley Barnhill on lap 7 to win the Island Motor II bombers feature on Saturday night.

Tipton was the fastest qualifier but started 11th due to the invert. He and teammate Jayme Corry quickly diced through the field and was running second and third behind Barnhill on lap 4. Barnhill clung to the bottom of the track, forcing Tipton to pass on the outside, an effort that took two laps to complete.

Barnhill was just as stingy in his battle with Corry for second and kept the position for the remainder of the race. Jerry Goff, Jr. came home in fourth with last week’s winner Rusty Powell Sr. completing the top-five.

“I want to thank Day Towing, Barry’s U-Pull It, my wife, GRT and Corry motorsports and all the guys at the shop,” Tipton said. “I couldn’t do it without y’all. I had a great race with Wesley and that’s always a lot of fun.”

Tipton extends his championship points lead to 57 over Corry.

Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks

Spencer Davis held off a hard-charging Gerald Wilkerson in a classic story of “the kid versus the veteran” to win Saturday night’s 20-lap super stocks-trucks feature on Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway.

The 13-year old Dawsonville, GA prodigy caught Shannon Jackson for the lead on lap 13 and methodically worked-over his back bumper for the next three laps, eventually forcing Jackson to ride up the groove in turns 1 and 2, handing the lead over to Davis for the remainder of the race.

The race was for double points and contested between a healthy field of 13 cars and trucks. Jackson held on to third while championship leader Steve ‘Chopper’ Stagner finished in fourth. Stagner leaves Mobile with a 25-point lead over Okie Mason, who finished fifth.

Action returns to Mobile International Speedway on July 14, headlined by a $1500-to-win modified feature, supported by the Island Motor II Bombers, Halls Motorsports Motorcycles, and Bob’s Speedshop Sportsman.  For more info, visit MobileSpeedway.net.
