Racing returns this Saturday night to Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL, with an action-packed evening of feature races highlighted by the fourth round of the Miller Lite Super Late Model Series, Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks, Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman and Island Motor II Bombers.
Andrew “Bubba” Pollard has become the king of Mobile International Speedway. The Georgia-native even thinks so highly of the Speedway he considers it his home track. He drives like it too, winning the Speedway’s Super Late Model track championship in 2010 and winning six races in a row from 2010-2011.
He’s also the most recent winner in the Series, winning last time out on May 26. With the victory, he also assumed the championship lead in both Mobile and Sunoco Gulf Coast Championship standings.
Pollard is streaking but he’s going to face his stiffest competition yet on Saturday night as D.J. VanderLey returns after a successful appeal of a season long suspension and fresh off a Midwest Cooling Towers Pro Late Model win on Saturday. Add Texan Casey Smith, truck series veteran Mike Garvey, teenage sensation Kyle Benjamin, Oklahoma’s Donnie Wilson, Pensacola’s Logan Boyett, Mobile’s Thomas “Moose” Praytor and a host of others to the line up and the Bad Boys are Back in town for a wild 100 laps in round 4 of the Miller Lite Super Late Model Series.
Island Motor II Bombers
The “King of Bombers” appears to be back.
Rusty Powell Sr. picked the best possible moment to secure his first win of the season. Last week’s victory occurred on double points night and moved him to third place and within 51 points of Brandon Tipton’s points lead.
Now that he’s won, the floodgates might open, allowing the 2008 track champion to reel off several wins in a row. This is potentially bad news for the Day Racing duo of Tipton and Jayme Corry who had dominated every event prior to Powell’s breakthrough victory last weekend.

Brannon Fowler leads the most competitive season of sportsman racing in recent memory as Fowler, James Patrick, Chad Robinson and Randy Thompson have each won in 2012. Each has collected trophies but its Fowler who has been the most consistent, leading the championship by 26 points over Patrick.
The most successful driver over the last two months has to be considered Robinson, who won five races in a row before suffering a DNF in last Saturday’s double points feature. The momentum has moved Robinson to fourth, 132 points behind Fowler; not bad considering Robinson missed the first two races of the season. The championship is far from a lost cause as long as Robinson can get back to his winning ways.
Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks
The Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks haven’t seen track action since Apr. 28. In that time, much has likely changed. Teams have had nearly two months to upgrade their parts and equipment add double points in the feature it will make this Saturday’s race one of the most unpredictable of the season.
Jessie Reid and Steve “Chopper” Stagner lead the points but more compelling is the subplot of Reid driving a Super Stock car versus Stagner’s Truck to relative parity in 2012. Both drivers are capable of winning on any given Saturday and the drama continues this weekend.
Stagner will always have the distinction of being the first truck driver who won in the combined cars versus trucks division, and he holds the current track record but now he has his sights set on another title – track champion. Stagner sits just 11 points behind Reid and the championship will likely hit a turning point this Saturday night.
