Seventeen year-old Chris Openshaw from Bessemer, Alabama raced to his third USCS 600 Sprint Car Series feature win of the 2012 season at Sugar Creek Raceway in Blue Ridge, GA on Saturday night.
Openshaw who started from the K&N Filters Pole Position, beat veteran mini sprint racer Bob Trapino from Alpharetta, GA to turn one on lap one and never looked back in his 20-lap charge to the USCS victory lane.
Trapino held on to the runner-up spot for three more laps before defending USCS 600 Sprint Car Series Champion and current National points leader Bobby Zaiontz from Columbus, MS raced past him and took up the chase for Openshaw.
After three different caution periods, Zaiontz was behind Openshaw on the re-starts, but had nothing for the Alabama young gun on this night and had to settle for second place six car lengths back as the checkers flew.
Matt McCullough from Atlanta, GA grabbed the K&N Filters podium Awar in third place at the finish line. Veteran racer Dwight Pilgram from McDonough, GA sped across the finish line in fourth place, and Mike Magic from Winder, GA rounded out the top five finishers.
The next USCS 600 Sprint Car Series event is Friday and Saturday, June 15th and 16th. The two-night, same-track special event is part of the 15th Annual East Alabama Sprint Car Xplosion at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, Alabama. The USCS 600 Sprint Car Series will contest two complete racing programs on back-to-back nights.
