The second installment of the Show Me the Money Series at Montgomery Motor Speedway in Montgomery, AL for 2012 is one to be remembered, as 14-year old Georgia racer Mason Massey scored the first late model victory of his career.
The Douglasville, GA youngster qualified eighth for the 100 lap feature. A die roll inversion put the teenager into the third starting position, however, behind two other youngsters: Spencer Davis of Dawsonville, GA, and Brady Boswell of Watkinsville, GA.
It was Davis who would take the early lead and pull away from the field. Davis led the first 66 circuits around the Montgomery half-mile before Massey stole the lead from him on lap 67. The fastest qualifiers, Hunter Robbins of Shorter, AL, and Augie Grill of Hayden, AL worked their way through the field during what was a 98 lap green flag run.
Grill found himself in second, chasing down the leader Massey. Massey, who had over a three-second advantage over Grill, saw what he did not want to see on lap 98 when the caution flag flew for a spin by Josh Adkins and Ken McFarland in turn two.
This would set up the proverbial green-white-checkered finish. It would be a two lap dash for cash, in the race paying $5,000 to the winner.
The double file restart came on with Massey on point, Grill to his outside on the front row. The second row consisted of Spencer Davis, and former Show Me the Money winner Justin South. Grill shot to the lead from the outside line, but Massey quickly worked his way back to the bottom as they took the white flag. Coming down the back stretch Massey took to the inside of Grill, battling side-by-side. The battle resulted in contact between Grill and South, and the cars battled side-by-side and three-wide. Grill’s night ended on the final lap in turn three, while Massey cruised to the checkered flag.
Robbins made it through the final lap wreck to come home second, and maintain his points lead in the Show Me the Money Series. South finished third with a damaged front bumper. Boswell held on for fourth, and Mobile driver D.J. VanderLey rounded out the top five in the sixteen car field.
In local division action it was Roger Wood Sr. cruising to victory in the Buzz division, followed by Floyd Brown. Joshua Wood, Matthew Robbins, and Jeremy Gwin rounded out the top five.
The Street Stock division got the opportunity to race an extended distance race. The 40-lap feature was led early on by Jason Mayhan. Bobby Knox Jr. took the lead from Mayhan and took off from there to capture the apparent victory. Knox was disqualified in post-race tech inspection, however, handing the win to Daniel Jacks. Bill Bethea III, Joe Bethea, Jr, Jason Mayhan, and Whit Goode rounded out the top five.
