Week three of Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags saw an evening of close racing deliver both new and old faces to victory lane. Fans in attendance were treated to competitive drag racing as the intense start to the 2012 campaign continued through the third week of the season.

In Pro action, David Harbin of McDonough, GA powered his way to the victory in a 1969 Chevrolet Nova.

In Super Pro action, Mark White suffered mechanical issues for the second time in three weeks, sidelining his 1967 Shelby Mustang after just one round of eliminations. This opened the door for Matt Carden, and he delivered with his second win of the season, possibly establishing himself as White’s chief competition as he defends his Super Pro points championship from last season.

The ever-competitive Truck Advanced division saw its third different winner in as many weeks as Will Coots brought home the trophy for the Southern Truck Parts racing team. The Truck division also continued the parody as Shelton Maynard went back to victory lane for the first time in 2012, giving the Truck division a different winner each week through the first three weeks of racing.

The fan-pleasing Mayor Match-Up race saw all four of Henry County’s mayors compete head-to-head down the 1/8-mile pit lane drag strip in identically-prepared cars. In the first round, Hampton’s R.W. Coley defeated Robert Price of Locust Grove. The second race of the first round saw Stockbridge mayor Lee Stuart take an easy victory when McDonough mayor pro tem Rufus Stewart suffered mechanical issues at the starting line. In the final round, Stuart defeated Coley in a closely-contested race.

Not only does Stockbridge now hold bragging rights of the fastest mayor in Henry County, but all Stockbridge residents will receive free admission to next week’s Friday Night Drags. Proof of residency will be required at the gate.

In the special Cadillac Only division, Art Petry went classic with his whip, driving a 1983 Coupe de Ville to victory lane. Doing so earned him 25 “Cadillac Riches” instant game tickets for the win, which could earn him up to $250,000 cash or a new Cadillac vehicle. This special division is in conjunction with the Cadillac Craze promotion with the Georgia Lottery. Fans will have one more opportunity to compete in this special Cadillac Only division at next week’s Friday Night Drags. Fans may also enter the special Cadillac Only division for Show-N-Shine judging.

Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags resumes May 18 with week four of drag racing action and the first Super Pro Challenge of 2012.  More information can be found at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com/drags.
