After keeping his car near the front all night, Chase Elliott saw misfortune strike his two teammates on restarts, opening the door for him to score his second straight victory at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, GA Saturday night, as he cruised to the win in the Racing Radios 100 Super Late Model feature.

Elliott stayed in the battle all night, racing against another second generation driver, Clay Alexander, and then holding off one of the South’s top short track aces, Bubba Pollard, to put himself in position to win.

“(We) had a really good race, said Elliott in victory lane.  “Our Aaron’s, Hendrick Cars.com Chevrolet was really fast.  Our car wasn’t perfect, but I felt like it was good enough for those short runs.  We were fortunate to have a pretty good restart, and was able to get out to a pretty good lead there at the end.”

Elliott’s team mate, T.J. Reaid, paced the event from the drop of the green flag, leading the first 16 laps, through two cautions.  The first came out on lap 14 when Dalton Grindle spun off turn four.  The second occurred when Donnie Wilson spun in turn four and made contact with the outside wall.

On the next restart, Reaid jumped the flag, drawing a drive through penalty from race officials.  That put the Acworth, GA racer one lap down, and moved Alexander to the top spot.

Stephen Nasse was on the charge, and a few laps later, Nasse put the bumper to the Tennessee racer, and moved to the lead.  Alexander would hold second, with Ben Kennedy moving to third, Elliott to fourth and Pollard to fifth.

The top five would stay that way for most of the following 40 laps, with Kennedy finally finding his way around Alexander to move to second.  Elliott would soon follow, along with Pollard.

As the race approached 25 laps to go, Kennedy closed on Nasse, and looked for a run for the lead in turn three.  As the leaders approached the lap car of Jimmy Doyle, Nasse made contact with Doyle, sending Doyle’s car down the track and into Kennedy.  All three were able to continue, with Nasse retaining the lead.

Five laps later, Nasse’s car slowed on the track, and went to the pits, his night over.  That moved Kennedy to the top spot, with Elliott second and Pollard third.

The caution flag flew again two laps later, this time for debris.  On the restart, Kennedy jumped the restart by about a car length, drawing a black flag himself.

As the field came around under power, Brandon Jones and Jimmy Henderson made contact, sending both cars hard into the inside wall.  Both drivers were okay, but the incident drew a red flag to allow the track crew to clean the scene.

When the race resumed, it was all Elliott, as the Dawsonville, GA youngster sped away t the victory.  Pollard would hold on for second, with Paul Kelley in third, Alexander in fourth, and Kenned in fifth.  Shawn Simpson, Ryan Blaney, David Odell, Gus Dean, and Reaid rounded out the top ten.

In other action, the Mini-Stock feature started out as a side-by-side, door to door battle between Aaron Calvert and Spanky Hicks.  They raced that way through a lap two caution, when Shawn Mize spun off turn two, while Greg Swink and Vernon Hicks spun off turn three.

The fight continued when the race returned to green, with Spanky taking the top spot on lap seven.

But Spanky’s night would come to an end with a hard impact into the turn four as the field came to caution for another spin by Shawn Mize.  Spanky walked away, but his race was over.

Calvert would inherit the lead, and would go on to score the victory.  Vernon Hicks in second, Avery Burgess in third, Mize in fourth, and Zack Minielly in fifth.

In the combined Sportsman and Renegade feature, Jackie Daniel jumped out front early and stayed there, scoring the victory over Jeff Chadwick in second, and Brian Sosebee in third.

“I just kind of got a jump on them on the start, and they kind of fell back a little bit, said Daniel in victory lane.”

In the Renegade portion, it was a tight race for Mike Childers and Jessie Thomas until lap 18, when Thomas made hard contact with the wall between turns three and four, resulting in a big flash fire.  Crews were on the scene quickly to put the fire out.  Thomas walked away uninjured.

That handed the lead and the win to Mike Childers, who finished out the rest of the race to pick up the victory.

“That was real good running with Jesse,” said Childers.  “I hate that he wrecked up there.  We had a real good run going.”

In the Truck feature, Conrad Compton led the opening 11 laps, until Cody Haskins took the top spot and checked out on the field.  Matt Vassar finished second, with Kevin Vassar third, Emilee Riley fourth, and Aaron Calvert in fifth.

“We just kind of conserved our stuff there for a little bit, and let them battle it out, then just pulled on by them there at the end,” Haskins said in victory lane.

In the Outlaw Late Model feature, Jason Bates charged early, and moved to the lead on lap five of the 35 lap feature.  Bates would go unchallenged to cross under the checkered flag first.

However, Bates’ car failed to pass post-race technical inspection, handing the win to Mike Davidson, giving him his second straight feature win of the year.  Matthew Wragg was moved to second, with Terry Martin in third, Michael Silvey in fourth, and David Murphy in fifth.

Gresham Motorsports Park will sit idle until June 9, when they’ll play host to the NASCAR K&N East Series for the Slack’s Auto Parts 150.  Also racing on that night will be the GMP Mini-Stock, Sportsman/Renegades, Trucks, and Outlaw Late Models.  Visit racegmp.com for more info.
