After coming off a wild week of racing that had fans thinking that there was a hidden full moon in the Georgia night last weekend, the full moon shining proudly off turn two Saturday night at Watermelon Capital in Cordele, GA causing some great racing and some hot tempers.
Among those who benefited from the full moon was Cody Hale, as the Americus, GA native doubled up in two divisions for the second time this season.
Hale’s first win of the night came in the Super Street feature. Brett Puckett and Tommy Skinner and making up the front row for the 15 lap event. Puckett was able to hold off a hard charging Skinner for the top spot in the early stages but the Hale, charging from the back of the pack, was able to prevail as the leader as the field reached the half-way point. As the laps expired, Hale came away with the win, with Puckett in second, Skinner in third, Lance Spurling fourth, and Wayne Lyle in fifth.
The Enduro feature came up next on the program with much of their excitement happening in practice at the expense of Michael Hutto, as he ventured off track in turn three and unfortunately made his way into the bushes, through the creek and into the neighboring farm off turn four to start his night. Much to Hutto’s advantage, he was able to bounce back and start on the pole in the feature with Justin Duckworth alongside.
Hutto and Duckworth battled side by side most of the event until Hutto managed to obtain the lead which was shortly taken by Cody Hale who went on to pick up his third win of the season and second of the night. Hutto crossed the line in second, with Duckworth in third, Jerry White in fourth with Lee Akin rounding out the top five.
In other action, the night started off calm with the 15 lap Bandolero feature, with youngsters ages eight to eleven taking to the track. By result of the heat race earlier in the evening, Lawson Ingold started on the pole with Connor Younginer starting on the front row. In the opening lap, Ingold and Younginer battled side by side until Younginer was able to grab the early lead on the back stretch. Younginer was able to hold on to the top spot until last week’s winner, Zach Leonhardi, who started in the rear, was able to make his way to the front and take the lead just shy of half way on lap seven. Leonhardi was able to hang onto the lead and pick up with the win with Younginer in a close second followed by Connor Okrzesik, Abby Marin and Lawson Ingold.
The twenty lap Legends main event rolled out next with Atlanta area drivers RS Senter and William Plemons making up the front row. As the green flew Senter was able to maintain an early lead, while fierce side by side battles began behind him Plemons, Alex Coffey and Joey Padgett for positions two through four. While Senter was able to get an early sizable lead, Coffey, Padgett, and Plemons were slowly beginning to reel him in. As the field entered into turns one and two for the final time, Coffey was able to get to the back bumper of Senter which caused him to slide up the track, allowing for the only lead change in the feature. As the checkered flag flew, it was Coffey taking his second win in a row followed by Padgett in second, Plemons in third followed by Senter and Hub Talbot rounding out the field.
It was in the post-race cool down lap when tempers began to show a bit as Senter showed his displeasure to Coffey by paying a special visit in winners’ circle, which was cut short by track officials, and celebrations were able to commence.
The Mini Stock feature was next on the schedule which had had brother vs. brother battle set on the front row with Brett Roberts on the pole and little brother Jake on the outside. Brett was able to get a good start on little brother and went on to take the win with brother Jake in second, James Pennington in third, AW Napier in fourth and Banks Perdue in fifth.
Also in action Saturday night were the Go Carts. Alex Boin scored the win, with Rebecca Turner in second, Trey Fulghan third, Gary Turner fourth, and Jeremy Coonfield fifth.
The action continues at Watermelon Capital Speedway on Saturday, May 19 with Outlaw Late Models in action, along with local divisions which include Go Karts, Bandoleros, Legends, Mini Stock, Pure Stock and Enduro.
