Last year, Shelby Stroebel dealt with a roller coaster of emotions at Meridian Speedway, an ASA Member Track in Meridian, ID. He won the ASA Modified Championship and lost one of his biggest fans.

In 2012, his focus is to repeat as the track champion and win the ASA Member Track National Championship.

“My goal in 2012 is the same as it was in 2011, the ASA Member Track National Championship,” the Boise, ID resident said.  “It’s a goal that I definitely want to achieve and it is going to be on my goal list until we do that.”

Last season, Stroebel captured the ASA Modified championship at the quarter-mile asphalt oval.  It most of his races, he started near the back of the field but at the end you would see his #24 Modified towards the front or in victory lane.

“The invert has us starting near the back in many of our races,” Stroebel said. “I like that because it makes you a really good racer and the win is more satisfying when you have to come through the field and earn it.”

In 2011, Stroebel competed in 15 events where had had six wins and 15 top-five finishes.

One thing that has helped Stroebel at Meridian is using the outside groove.

Stroebel started racing as a way to keep his father Allen busy after the patriarch was diagnosed with leukemia.  Racing proved to do well as it went into remission, but returned last year.  Sadly, Allen Stroebel lost his battle a few days after Shelby wrapped up the track championship.  A week later, Adam Nelson, Promoter of Meridian Speedway, named a Modified event in honor of Allen.  Shelby made a move on the outside, coming out of turn four, on the last lap to win the event.

“It has been a struggle during the off season and getting ready for this season without having him around and helping us with the race car,” Stroebel said.  “But I have a few good friends who have been helping me.  We stay focused on that because he would have wanted us too.  The main thing is that we continue racing.”

Along with working on his own race car, he is also helping his daughter Caitlin get ready for another season of racing her Legend car at Meridian Speedway.  She may also run some races in the ASA Modifieds this season.

“If he leads off this season like he did last year, the rest of the competitors will have their work cut out to beat him,” Adam Nelson, Meridian Speedway Promoter said. “He was a contender for the National championship in 2011, and he could be the one to catch in 2012.”
