The 2011 season ended on a high note for Hunter Robbins. The young driver from Shorter, AL took home the 2011 Show Me the Money Series championship at he famed half-mile Montgomery Motor Speedway in Montgomery, AL. He began his bid to defend that title with a strong victory in the first of six scheduled Show Me the Money Series races of 2012. It was Robins’ fifth career victory in the series, tying him for the all-time winners mark with Augie Grill.
Josh Hamner of Chelsea, AL set fast time in qualifying with a lap of 18.926 seconds, an average speed of over 95 mph. Hamner rolled a six on the die, inverting Grill to the pole spot for the start of the 100 green flag lap feature. Grill started on pole, with Easley, SC driver Kyle Benjamin on his outside, followed by young gun Mason Massey and Georgia veteran Mike Garvey.
Grill set out to the early lead in a race that saw a virtually unheard of 65-lap green-flag run from the start. Even with the race going green for the first 65 laps, the action was packed from one end of the speedway to the other. Cars battled nose-to-tail, and side-by-side for the duration of the race. A spin by Daniel Bolden in turn two would bring out the first caution with 65 laps complete.
On the ensuing restart, Garvey got the jump from the outside lane to power past Augie Grill for the lead. Garvey would lead only six laps, however, as Robbins was a man on a mission and grabbed the top spot. Robbins would begin to stretch out the lead, and the race was on for second.
Fourteen year-old driver Anderson Bowen worked his way from eight spot after the restart to find himself battling for the top three with Garvey and Grill. Fast qualifier Hamner would lose control and spin with just two laps to go, setting up a green-white-checkered finish.
With the near sell-out crowd on their feet, Robbins and Grill led the front row on the restart with Bowen and Garvey in the second row. Robbins jumped out to the lead and Grill slid up a little in turn one. Heading into turn one on the final lap Bowen and Grill got side-by-side and made contact. Grill would slide up the banking and into the turn one wall, while Bowen made it through to finish second behind Robbins. Garvey, Kyle Benjamin, and Bubba Pollard rounded out the top five.
In local division action, Regan Baker made it two-for-two in the Super Stock division, backing up his win from last season with another victory in a 15 lap feature. Okie Mason and Shelby Reuse rounded out the field.
Joshua Wood proved why he is always tough to contend with in the Buzz division, leading the final fourteen laps en-route to the victory. Tim Grace, Matthew Robbins, Adam Freeman, and Truss Bethea Jr. rounded out the top-five.
The Street Stock division was as exciting as it always is. Joe Bethea Jr. set fast time in qualifying, but rolled an eight on the die for the inversion. This put South Alabama Speedway regular Billy Maxie from Jack, AL on the pole for the 25 lap feature. He would lead only the first lap as Daniel Jacks grabbed the top spot. Bethea quickly worked his way to the front from his eighth place starting spot to capture the lead from Jacks on lap five. Bethea led until David Wood got around him at the half-way point of the race. Wood had to hold off a hard-charge from another South Alabama Speedway regular, Chris Lucas on a late-race restart to seemingly take the victory. Bethea crossed the line third, with defending division champion Billy Ammons fourth, and Richard Patino fifth.
In post-race technical inspection Wood was found to have an illegal rev-limiter box, disqualifying him from the event. Lucas was also disqualified for having too much compression. The disqualifications put 2010 champion Bethea in the winner’s spot, follower by Ammons, Patino, Jason Mayhan, and Jacks.
Montgomery Motor Speedway will take a few weeks off, and return to action on April 21 with a 50 lap feature for the Modifieds, as well as the introduction of the new Bomber division. Roadrunner division cars from South Alabama Speedway will be allowed to compete with the Bomber division under their track’s rules for this race. Street Stocks and Buzz will also be competing on April 21.
