Cale Gale Scores Hometown ARCA Win At Mobile

Everybody loves a hometown win.  But for Cale Gale, the victory in Saturday’s Mobile ARCA 200 was especially sweet, as the Hometown Hero scored his second ARCA Racing Series victory in the inaugural series event at his home track of Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL.

It wasn’t an easy win.  First, Gale had to do battle with another rising star, Dawsonville, GA’s Chase Elliott, who was making his first ARCA start.  Then he had to chase down Grant Enfinger late in the going, and hold off a hard charging Chad Hackenbracht before he could enjoy the win in Mobile’s victory lane.

“It’s been awesome,” said Gale in victory lane.  “Obviously, this is our hometown track.  There’s been a lot of people that have helped me through the years that were able to be here.

“It’s just special to win at home.  To be able to do it the first time, obviously.  I told myself last night, if we don’t pull it off tomorrow, hopefully ARCA will come back and we’ll have to do it again, but we got it out of the way.”

The day started with Alex Bowman on the pole.  Bowman would take the early lead in front of a near capacity crowd at the famed south Alabama half-mile.   Bowman would pull out to a small advantage over outside pole starter Elliott, but would see that lead evaporate when Levi Youster spun off of the second turn, bringing out the first caution of the day.

On the restart, Bowman would again move out front, but soon found himself side by side with Elliott.  Elliott would take the lead on lap 29, with Gale also sliding past to take second.  Bowman would fall in line in third, and Erik Jones moved to fourth.

Elliott would hold the lead through the next two cautions.  With the third caution of the day flying, Elliott, Gale, and Jones would make their first pit stop of the day, handing the lead back to Bowman.  He would hold the lead over Hackenbracht, Frank Kimmel, and Ryan Reed.  Meanwhile, Senoia, GA racer Bubba Pollard, making his first ARCA start since 2005, was on the move, picking up several positions to situate himself in eighth place.

The yellow would fly again when Tommy O’Leary and Nelson Canache tangled in turn three.  With there being no retaining wall around the track (with the exception of along the front stretch), both cars left the track and ended up on the grass outside the racing surface.  Both were able to continue.

This time, Bowman, Hackenbracht, Pollard, and Chris Buescher used the caution to make their pit stops, moving Jones into the top spot.  He was followed by Kimmel, Reed, and Mikey Kile.  Meanwhile, Gale and Elliott, on fresher tires, had been making up ground lost in the pits, and found themselves in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

When the green flag flew again, Gale and Elliott continued their charge, and a few laps later, found themselves in the top two positions, with Gale showing the way.

The fifth caution of the day flew when Brandon Davis spun coming off the fourth turn.  Also involved was Michael Leavine. Davis was able to continue, but Leavine was done for the day.

Gale continued to lead on the restart, with Elliott second.  Behind the lead duo, Enfinger began hacking his way through traffic, and soon found himself in third, tracking won the two leaders.  Following a caution for a spin in turn two by Daryl Eustace, Enfinger had a clear shot at the top two spots.

He would continue to stalk the leaders on the restart, making his way around Elliott to move to second, and then continued his charge until he swept past Gale and into the lead in lap traffic on lap 128.

Meanwhile, Elliott began to fade, having some issue that caused his No. 9 Chevy to slow and drop back through the field.  As Elliott struggled, Pollard charged.  After restarting in 19th position after his pit stop, the Senoia, GA speedster made his way up into the top five.

When the event’s seventh caution came out, all the leaders hit pit road.  Enfinger would leave the pits first, followed by Gale, Mason Mingus, Clint King, and Hackenbracht.

On the restart, Gale was on the charge, moving past Enfinger to retake the lead.  The caution would come out again moments later, when Mingus spun off of turn four.

The caution was a big break for Elliott, who had lost a lap in the pits.  Under the previous caution, his Aaron’s crew had fixed the issue with his No. 9, and Elliott was the first car one lap down when the caution came out, putting Elliott back on the lead lap.

Gale would check out on the restart, with Hackenbracht giving chase.  The action was again interrupted by a caution flag involving Kimmel.

The caution would fly again soon after the next restart, when Youster spun on the front stretch, sliding out of the track in turn one and coming to rest on the outside grass.  His day was over.

The race restarted with less than 10 laps to go, and Gale appeared to have the win in hand when the caution flew when Will Kimmel stopped on the front stretch, setting up a Green-White-Checkered finish.

On the final restart, Hackenbracht made a strong run at Gale, getting to the leader’s back bumper, and looking low off of turn two.  But Gale held him off, and would drive away to the victory.

Along with it being a hometown win, Gale revealed why the victory was even more special for him.

“My grandfather passed away last year,” he said.  “He spent many a Saturday night down here.  It’s my first race to win since he passed away.”

Hackenbracht finished second, with Bowman third, Kile fourth, and King fifth.

Buescher, Brennan Poole, Jared Marks, Tom Hessart, and Elliott rounded out the top ten.

Pollard would come home 11th in the final run down.

“We had a real good race car on long runs,” Pollard said. “We just struggled a little on the short runs.  It’s not bad, we’ve got all four corners on it, and we’ll move on to the next one.  We could never seem to get track position.  We easily had a top three or top five car.  We learned, and we’ll go on to the next one.”

Pollard said he looks to make his next ARCA start at Michigan in June.
