Alex Bowman won his first two starts in the ARCA Racing Series, but fell short of a third straight win at Daytona last month. Tomorrow, he’ll be in an excellent position to return to his winning ways.
Bowman drove a qualifying lap of 17.547 seconds (102.582 mph) to win the Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell, and he will start up front in ARCA’s first race at Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL. The Mobile ARCA 200 will begin at 2 p.m. Central this afternoon, and Bowman is ready to show his worth in a race all over again.
“We have a great eBay Motors and St. Jude’s Dodge,” Bowman said. “I can’t thank all the guys at Cunningham Motorsports enough. I’ve always been terrible at qualifying, quite honestly, and for us to get a pole definitely shows how good the car is. We’ll definitely have a good race car tomorrow. Look for us up front.”
In three prior ARCA starts and 14 NASCAR K&N Pro Series races, Bowman had never qualified on the pole. The 18-year-old from Tucson, AZ will start inside Chase Elliott, the son of NASCAR champion Bill Elliott. Elliott, just 16, has experience in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series but has never raced in an ARCA car. He qualified just 0.008 second slower than Bowman in the No. 9 Aaron’s Dream Machine/Hendrickcars.com Chevrolet for Bill Elliott Racing.
Erik Jones, the first 15-year-old to drive in the ARCA Racing Series, will start third after qualifying in 17.708 seconds in the No. 55 Venturini Motorsports Chevrolet. Brian Keselowski and Ryan Reed will round out the first five starting positions.
Chad Hackenbracht, Brennan Poole, Matt Lofton, and Alabama drivers Cale Gale and Grant Enfinger rounded out the top 10. Nine-time ARCA champion Frank Kimmel will start 11th, just ahead of Southern short track star Bubba Pollard, who will race in an ARCA for the first time since 2005 after recently dominating late model events at Mobile.
