It didn’t take long for Bubba Pollard to find his way back into victory lane in 2012.

Pollard recorded his first career victory in the 36th annual Rattler 250 at South Alabama Speedway in Opp, AL Sunday, joining drivers such as Buck Simmons, Pete Hamilton, and Ronnie Sanders to score a win in the famed Super Late Model short track event.

After swapping the lead with Kyle Benjamin throughout portions of the 250 lap grind, the Senoia, GA speedster made his way around fellow Georgian T.J. Reaid, driving for Bill Elliott Racing, and Casey Smith with just over 25 laps to go.

Pollard would not look back, moving on to pick up the win.  He had twice finished as runner-up in the event, in 2010 and 2009.

Reaid would finish second, with Smith third.  Johanna Long was fourth, with Stephen Nasse fifth.

The scariest moment of the day occurred just before the 200 lap mark, when Benjamin and D.J. VanderLey tangled coming off the fourth turn, ending up in the wall.  Benjamin took a wild ride, ending up on his roof on the front stretch.  Both drivers walked away, their days over.

Due to persistent rain showers on Saturday, the Rattler 125 Pro Late Model feature was also pushed to Sunday, and was run following the Super Late Model feature.

However, the event was cut from its scheduled 125 laps to 100 laps.  It was the second straight year the event would not be run its full distance.

Augie Grill jumped out front early, and went mostly unchallenged until seven laps to go, when Atlanta, Georgia’s Mike Garvey charged past for the top spot.  Kyle Benjamin would also slide by, and give chase to Garvey.

With two laps to go, Garvey’s car got loose coming off turn two, opening the door for Benjamin to take the top spot.  Garvey would catch the youngster going into turn three, with the two making contact.  Benjamin spun, bringing out the caution.

Both Garvey and Benjamin were sent to the back of the field for bringing out the caution, handing the lead back to Grill.

Grill would stay out front the rest of the way, scoring his first Rattler PLM victory.  R.S. Senter finished second, with Bubba Pollard in third, Mason Massey fourth, and Chris Davidson fifth.

In other action, Cody Haskins scored the Pro Truck win earlier in the afternoon.

All results are unofficial until certified by race officials.

Racing action returns to South Alabama Speedway on April 14 with race number one for the Viper Series, along with local classes.  Visit southalabamaspeedway.com for more info.
