Danica Patrick wrote a little racing history Friday afternoon. She became the second female to win a pole in the NASCAR Nationwide Series by turning in the fastest time in qualifying for Saturday’s DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona International Speedway.
Patrick’s lap at 49.250 seconds, 182.741 mph, gave the Chevrolet driver her first career NASCAR pole.
Patrick gave a lot of the credit on the run to her team and her crew chief, Tony Eury, Jr.
“Tony builds really good cars, and the guys obviously that helped him do that did a great job, and I’m really thrilled for Tony Jr.,” said Patrick. “This is something that he wanted, and so for me to be able to push the pedal and turn the wheel to get that done makes me feel good.”
Patrick’s pole is the first for a female since March 10, 1994, when Shawna Robinson took the top spot for the Nationwide Series event at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Flanking her on the front row will be Trevor Bayne, with Elliott Sadler set to roll off third, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. fourth, and Austin Dillon staring fifth.
Saturday’s race is slated to roll off around 1:30 pm est Saturday, with live television coverage set for ESPN beginning at 12:15 pm est.
