For the fifth straight year, Lanier National Speedway in Braselton, Georgia will play host to the Ice Cold Shriners Bowl, headlined by a 100-lap Pro Late Model feature, on Sunday, Jan. 8.
Despite the event’s name, forecasters are calling for temperatures in the low to mid 60s for the race weekend, as area race fans get the chance to see the first racing in North Georgia of the year.
Also on the line for Sunday’s competitors is a track provisional for the Pro Late Modle portion of the upcoming CRA SpeedFest event slated for later this month at LNS.
To qualify for the provisional, drivers must compete in the Ice Cold Shriner’s bowl. If one of those drivers do not qualify for the PLM segment of the SpeedFest weekend or make the main event thorugh a last chance qualifing race, they will be eligible to use the provisional. It will be awareded to the highest finisher not making the field.
Defending event champion David Ragan will be in attendance for Sunday’s feature events, but won’t be defending his title due to previous engagements.
Drivers from around the area, including Senoia, Georgia’s Bubba Pollard. Dacula, Georgia’s Russell Fleeman and Dawsonville, Georgia’s Spencer Davis are expected to compete.
It’s been an event that’s seen a variety of winners over the years.
In 2011, Ragan held off a hard charge by Pollard to score the victory. Greg Simpson, Daniel Hemric and Kyle Benjamin rounded out the top five.

Joey Senter was the winner of the inaugural event in 2008, with Georgia Racing Hall of Famer Ronnie Sanders second. Dennis Reno Jr., Rodney Benefield and Stephens ran third through fifth.
While Sunday’s main event usually garners a lot of attention, it won’t be the only action on the famed North Georgia short track over the weekend.
Sharing the bill on Sunday with the Pro Late Models will be Trucks, Outlaw Late Models, Legends and Bandoleros.
Action kicks off on Saturday afternoon, with practice running from noon to 2 pm. Following the 2:30 pm drivers meeting, Bandolero and Legends heat races will follow at 2:45 pm.
Qualifying for the Pro Late Models and local divisions are slated for 3:15 pm, followed by action for the Georgia Winter Series with Bandoleros and Legends.
Action gets underway on Sunday with the drivers meeting at 12:30 pm, an autograph session at 1 pm and the start of feature events at 2 pm.
