For most of us, there is one thing in our lives that we all can point towards and say “that made a difference.”

It was a single race in July that did it that for Skylar Holzhausen, which vaulted him to win the Rookie of the Year title in the tough ASA Midwest Tour.

Back on July 9, 2011, Holzhausen entered the ASA Midwest Tour event at Elko Speedway in Elko, MN.  The title sponsor Grandstay Hospitality put up $10,000 to the winner of the 250-lap event.

The rookie driver from Bangor, WI saw this as an opportunity.  That opportunity was to continue competing during the 2011 season.  Holzhausen would hold off 2011 ASAMT Champion Andrew Morrissey for the win and that $10,000 check came in handy as he was able to complete the season and capture the Rookie of the Year title.

It was a great showcase event for the 2011 ASAMT Champion and Rookie of the Year as they dominated the entire event.

“That win really helped us for the rest of the year,” Holzhausen said as he looked back to the successful season.  “Our team didn’t have much for sponsorship and our funds were running low that we may have had enough to run a couple more events. Luckily, we won it and were able to run the rest of the season and had a great time.”

Overall, he would finish the 2011 season finishing ninth in points with that one win, three top-five and seven top-ten finishes in 12 starts.

The son of Midwest legend Steve Holzhausen, Skylar was able to lien on his father for advice throughout most of the season.  Steve was still recovering from serious injuries he received last season.  “It was great to have him helping me out,” Skylar said.  “The best advice he gave me was to stay consistent and keep the tires underneath you.”

Skylar proved what he learned from his father not only in the ASA Midwest Tour, but he made a huge statement when he won the Big 8 Series 68-lap feature at the popular Oktoberfest Race Weekend at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, WI.

He had a bad qualifying run, won a qualifier race and started 16th in the feature event.  The event was caution free and Holzhausen was moving through the field.  He worked his way up to second with 20-laps to go but was 20 car lengths behind early leader Jon Lemke.  It only took him eleven laps to erase that distance and make the winning move with eight laps to go in the event.

Holzhausen plans for 2012 is to compete for the ASA Midwest Tour championship.  “My plans are simple.  That is to continue to stay consistent and get some wins,” Holzhausen said.  “If we do that, we will be challenging for the championship.”

“This is one of the goals we had when we created this series in 2007,” Tim Olson, ASA Midwest Tour President said.  “That goal is for a driver like Skylar to race against some of the best competitors and be successful.  His hard work and dedication is what made him successful to win the Rookie of the Year title.  He is also very talented behind the wheel.  He has proven that the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree when you look at the success that his father Steve has had in short track racing.  Skylar will be just like his father.”
