Pollard Sets New Track Record, Takes Snowball Pole

Bubba Pollard didn’t head to 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida this weekend with the idea of finishing well in the 44th annual Snowball Derby.

He went there looking to top off his phenomenal 2011 season by picking up a win.

The Senoia, Georgia wheelman fired off the first shot in what promises to be a big battle in Sunday’s Super Late Model feature by setting a new track record in Snowball Derby qualifying Friday night.

Pollard toured the Pensacola half-mile with a lap 1t 16.290, breaking the 31 year old track record that had been set by Gary Balough (16.33).

Other qualifiers of note include defending Snowball Derby champion Johanna Long, who timed in 13th quickest, NASCAR Sprint Cup driver David Ragan, who laid down the 17th fastest lap and veteran driver Mike Garvey, who timed in 22nd fastest.

Only the top 30 are locked in, with a qualifying race to set most of the rest of the field set for Saturday afternoon.
