The GA For Fair Tax / David Ragan Ford Outlaw Late Model Series did battle again at Cordele, Georgia’s Watermelon Capital Speedway, putting on another show that proved the series as one of the most exciting in the southeast.
David Hodges, from Valdosta, Georgia, stormed to the lead from the pole, and would go on to score the win.
But it didn’t come easy.
On the drop of the green flag, Hodges jumped out to an early lead with Jason Bates from Gainesville, GA second and Steve Renner from Lizella, GA third.
The battle for second through fifth was intense between Bates, Steve Renner, Jimmy Motes from Gainesville, GA, and Steve Barker from Hampton, GA. Renner made the move to second, which pushed Bates back to third. Motes tried the same move but made contact and spun. That moved Motes to the rear with Dusty Cone from Kathleen, GA moving to fourth and Barker still in fifth.
Watermelon Capital Speedway has the “choose rule,” which means all starts and restarts are double file. Renner and Bates decided they wanted the inside line on the restart, which gave the outside to Cone.
On the restart, Cone jumped out in the lead with Hodges close on his tail. Just two laps in, Hodges made the move for the lead and set sail again. Renner then clipped the right side tires off the top of the track going down the back straightaway, which turned his machine sideways. Renner locked up the brakes sliding to a stop but Dusty Cone couldn’t make the move fast enough and clipped the front end of Renner’s car, ending his night.
Cone was able to continue but was not able to be as competitive as before. On the restart it was all Hodges again as he pulled a four to five car length lead. At the end of the race, it was Hodges first, Jason Bates second, and Jimmy Motes third. Steve Barker and Dusty Cone rounded out the top five.
In other action, Wesley Burke topped the field in the Enduro feature to score the victory. Michael Hutto ran second, with Chris Neighbors third, Justin Duckworth fourth and Jason Lang fifth.
The Mini-Stock feature was a Roberts family show, as Jake Roberts scored the win, with Brett Roberts finishing second. Ben Massingille was third, with Ted Rowley fourth and Gary Zajdek fifth.
In the Bandolero feature, Lee Hodges took the win, with Jordan McCallum second. T.J. Ridgon scored the Legends feature win,
Brian Duckworth picked up the Pure Stock victory, with Mike Hood running second.
Coming up next at Watermelon Capital Speedway is the track’s season finale on Oct. 15, featuring double points in all classes.
The track will host the Georgia Fair Tax/David Ragan Ford Outlaw Late Model Series, along with local classes, including Bandoleros, Legends, Mini Stock, Pure Stock and Enduros, with $500 on the line for the Enduro feature winner.
