Hodges, Jr. Wins Outlaw Late Model Feature At ‘The Melon’

David Hodges, Jr. topped a strong field of Outlaw Late Models to score the victory in the Ga. Fair Tax/David Ragan Ford Outlaw Late Model Feature Saturday night at Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, Georgia.

Hodges,of Valdosta, GA, started on the pole, with Hampton, GA’s Steve Barker on the outside.

After racing side-by-side for the first half lap, Hodges would ease into the lead, with Stuart Dutton, of Tallahassee, FL, and Valdosta’s Dusty Cone slipping past Barker to take the second and third positions.

Dutton closed on Hodges, challenging him for the lead.  The action slowed on lap 10, when Fairburn, Georgia’s Michael Silvey spun in the first turn.  Silvey avoided contact with anything, and was able to continue.

As the cars made laps under caution, Dutton’s car suddnely slowed.  His night was over with a mechanical failure.

Hodges again pulled away on the restart, with Barker moving to second and Silvey to third.

As the race neared the 25 lap mark, Stewart Smith’s car suddenly broke loosein turn four, bringing out the second caution on the night.

On the restart, Cone was able to get the edge, moving into the lead with Hodges giving change.  Hodges would challenge for the top spot several times, finally making the pass for the lead with 10 laps to go.  He continued on from there to record his second victory of the year in the series.

Cone would finish second, follwed by Barker, Silvey and Smith.

The Ga. Fair Tax/David Ragan Ford Outlaw Late Model Series will return to action at Watermelon Capital Speedway on Oct. 1.

In other action, Cordele, Georgia’s Wesley Burke scored the win in the Enduro feature, beating out a strong field of cars.  Milton Posey ran second, with Michel Huto, Jasn Lang and Chris Neighbors rounding out the top five.

Billy Nipper picked up the win in the Pure Stock feature, topping Carlton Isreal, Vemon Walls and Brian Duckworth for the victory.

In the Mini Stock feature Brett Roberts of Sylvester, GA picked up the win.  Banks Perdue ran second, with A.W. Napier third, B.T. Roberts fourth and James Pennington fifth.

Mark Younginer of Stockbridge, Georgia won the Legends feature, while Griffin, Georgia’s Bubba Harry won the Bandolero feature.  Harry was followed to the line by Megan Younginer, Lee Hodges and Conner Younginer.

Racing returns to Watermelon Capital on Saturday, Sept. 17, as the National Vintage Racing Association’s Vintage Thunder Series returns, featuring vintage race crars from the 1930s-1980s, along with racing in the Mini-Stock, Enduro, Pure Stock, Legends and Bandolero divisions.
