Woody Bryant enjoyed another great race day Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia, winning the 7.50 Index class and finishing runner-up in Pro class on Saturday.  He doubled up in the same two classes at the July 30 event.

Another family member, Wade Bryant, made it all the way to the final round in Open Comp Full Body.  Gary Dunn began driving for Winston Brooks this year, and enjoyed his first win since winning a Wally race in 2005.  Peter and Dianne Mansolillo chose to enjoy their 25th wedding anniversary doing what they love at the racetrack.  Along with congratulations from their racing friends, the Mansolillos were also rewarded with a runner up finish in the 7.50 Index class.

Woody Bryant, from Bowman, GA made it to his first of two final round appearances in the 7.50 Index class.  Bryant met Peter Mansolillo’s Suwannee, GA based ’80 Monza in the final, and both ran really tight races.  Bryant’s ’82 Camaro got the win light, crossing the finish line with a 7.501 at 92.51 mph.  Mansolillo crossed the stripe milliseconds later with a 7.502 at 92.87 mph.  Ed Nalley (’71 Camaro – Carnesville, GA) and John Norris (’86 Camaro – Royston, GA) ended their day in the semi-final round.

“My lucky charm (his wife Paula) came with me today,” said Bryant.  “Also, John (Norris) and I are looking forward to the last 7.50 race.  Hopefully it will come down to me and him for the championship.”

Twenty one year old Ryan Johnson from Pendergrass, GA got his start in bracket racing late in 2010, thanks to help from friend William Blackie.  Recently, Johnson has been making it deeper into the rounds, and enjoyed his first ever win Saturday in his fast ’82 Mustang.  Johnson was the only person who could stop Woody Bryant (who won 7.50 Index earlier in the day) from doubling up, and he did it in style, with a 0.007 reaction time and a slowing 6.14 at 108.42 mph pass (6.11 dial).  Bryant crossed the stripe 0.03 seconds later with a slight breakout 7.469 at 93.65 mph (7.47 dial).  Semi-final finisher Al Baker (’70 Maverick – Marietta, GA) has also been going deep into the Pro rounds recently (he finished runner up in the previous event).

“We got it!,” Johnson exclaimed after the win.   “I want to give all the glory to the Lord.  If it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t be here.”

Stan Sinack of Lilburn, GA met Jefferson, GA racer Michael Goodwin again in the 6.50 Index final.  Goodwin’s ’70 Dart actually ran closer to the index with a 6.54 at 103.75 mph, but Sinack’s ‘69 Dart parlayed a better reaction time into the win light, posting a 6.57 at 97.25 mph.  Sean Garner (’89 S-10 Blazer – Oxford, GA) and Lloyd Shanks (’92 Beretta – Jefferson, GA) earned the semi-finalist positions.  Sinack dedicated his win to late friend and big Chevrolet fan Doug Bethea, who recently passed away due to cancer.

Open Comp Full Body winner John Norris continued his domination, winning this event against another Bryant family member, Wade.  Although they are good friends off the track, Norris did not cut him any slack, reacting with a great 0.023 second time and posting a 7.50 at 84.39 mph (7.48 dial).  Bryant’s ’70 Camaro broke out with a 6.87 at 100.04 mph (6.89 dial).  Chad Brewer (’73 Nova – Canton, GA) was the lone semi-finalist.

After a six year drought, Gary Dunn piloted his Chevy to victory in the Super Pro category. Photo by Tim Glover

Flowery Branch, GA’s Gary Dunn enjoyed his first Super Pro win in six years after defeating Brad Howard’s Gainesville, GA based ’03 Miller dragster in the final.  Although Howard had been reacting all evening with times mostly in the 0.002 to 0.007 second range, Dunn was the one with a 0.005 second react in the final, which he carried to the victory in Winston Brook’s ’82 S-10 pickup.  Dunn’s time was 6.25 at 107.62 mph (6.24 target) and Howard was also close with a 4.88 at 140.68 mph (4.87 dial).  Last week’s winner, Thomas Bell (’11 Undercover dragster – Toccoa, GA) earned the semi-finalist portion of the purse.

“This is Winston Brook’s first win as a car owner,” Dunn said.  “I just get the privilege of holding the steering wheel.”

Sportsman racer Harold Wilson has been steadily winning rounds this season with his Winder, GA based ’74 Nova, and moved up in the points with his third win of the year, this time against Allen Schaffer (’83 Thunderbird – Austell, GA).  Wilson carded a good 13.35 at 98.74 mph (13.31 dial) to Schaffer’s red-lighting effort of 15.02 at 92.94 mph (14.97 dial).  Allen Long (’96 Silverado – Ballground, GA) took home the semi-finalist portion of the purse.

Tim Sutton from Clermont, GA returned to the Motorcycle winner’s circle on his ’83 Suzuki for the fourth time in 2011, and this time he took over the points lead from Jay Rhyne.  Sutton met Night of Fire winner Jimmy “Cha Cha” Heisler’s ’00 Kawasaki in the final, and squeaked out the victory, crossing the big end stripe 0.0012 seconds in front of Heisler with a 9.09 at 134.89 mph (9.00 goal).  Heisler’s time was 10.75 at 125.19 mph (10.68 dial).  Don Chavous (’00 Suzuki – Snellville, GA) and Paul Cavanaugh (’02 Hayabusa – Loganville, GA) were the semi-finalist pair.

“I’ve been chipping away at the lead, and took it tonight, moving 20 ahead of Jay”, Sutton said.
