Joe Armistead, Jr. knocked “Racin Jason” Williams from the winner’s circle for the first time since June by winning Saturday night’s feature for the Mike Wheeler’s Automotive & Transmission Late Models at New Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA.
Russ Ogletree also snapped a four race win streak by Tod Darda in the Crown Security Crate Late Model division while Sam Moore picked up the laurels in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets stopping Marcus Caswell’s winning streak at two in a row.
Dusty Jones kept his win streak in tact with another dominating performance in the Mini Stock Mania special 25-lap feature and Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran topped the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock main for his unprecedented thirteenth victory of the year.
Senoia’s Joe Armistead, Jr. ran the first lap and a half side by side with pole sitter Kenny Collins of Colbert in the Late Model feature. Armistead, who is not afraid of the high line around the tough 3/8ths mile clay oval, kept his foot on the floor to win the early race duel for the lead while competitors dodged for their positions.
Phenix City’s Lavon Sparks made a wild pass during the initial start of the race, creating a three wide tussle in turn two with Brooks ‘Magic’ Matt Dooley and Newnan’s Rucker Orr. Sparks would come out of the fray with the advantage as Orr would settle in behind just ahead of the 15-year-old Dooley.
The leaders were beginning to move through lapped traffic when the crowd was hushed by a scary moment involving Jake Herrell. The Temple driver’s engine detonated as he powered up out of turn four creating a huge fireball along the front stretch. Herrell was not injured.
Armistead never looked back after the restart, while Collins and Thomaston’s Shane Fulcher were left to battle for the bridesmaid position. Fulcher tried several times to gain advantage over Collins exiting the turns, but Collins would slam the door shut each time.
The leaders would stay in their spots as they cruised under the checkers. Armistead won for the first time since the first week of May. Collins finished second and Thomas third. The five race win streak for Locust Grove’s Racin Jason Williams ended with the points leader finishing fourth and Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris rounding out the top five.
Newnan’s Oliver Gentry was sixth while fellow Newnan driver Rucker Orr jumped past Lavon Sparks on the final circuit to snare sixth. Orr and Sparks made contact in turn three with Orr able to move past and steal away the position.
Another streak ended in the Crown Security Crate Late Model division as Phenix City’s Russ Ogletree held off LaGrange’s Tod Darda for the victory. Ogletree had been vacant from New Senoia Raceway’s winner’s circle since the first week of May, due largely to the superb driving efforts of Darda over the past two months. Darda had won four straight and six of the last eight contests for the Crate Late Models.
Saturday night it was all Ogletree as the youngster grabbed the lead early and pulled away from Darda. LaGrange’s Dennis Hale looked to be the third man in line until he developed problems late in the contest. That left third place for Jenkinsburg’s Trey White who has been running his best ever over the last four weeks. Fayetteville’s Troy Tyson has also solidified his improved success with a fourth place run and divisional point’s leader Doug Ludwig rounded out the first five.
Ludwig kept the fans on their edge of their seats as he battled throughout the 25-lap feature with Fayetteville’s Richie Williams. The two bumped and banged their way into a couple of cautions as neither could get away from the other. The classic New Senoia Raceway battle ended with Williams on the wrecker and Ludwig running in the top five.
The Newnan Bonding B Cadets also saw a modest win streak come to an end Saturday night. Newnan’s Marcus Caswell had won the previous two races and looked as though he may make it three in a row after securing the pole position during early night qualifying.
Caswell locked horns on the initial drop of the green with Thomas Mewborn of Greenville. Mewborn bounced off Caswell and then hit the front stretch wall before being collected by Lithia Springs driver TJ Joiner. The hard impact with the concrete ended a good effort by Mewborn along with West Point’s Charlie Garrett, who had spun to avoid the pile up before slamming the inside retaining wall.
The field was realigned to try and start the race for a second time. Caswell won the drag race with Grantville’s Blake Griffin to take the initial race lead. Points leader Jeff Carter of Stockbridge ran third.
Fans were watching a great race behind the leaders as all eyes were on Sam Moore. The Box Springs’ veteran restarted at the back of the pack, but was charging through the field. As Caswell and Griffin pulled away up front, Moore battled with Gay’s Jay Conner and Newnan’s Chris Carr for the number six position. Moore used a great move in turn two to overtake both drivers on the seventh lap of the 20-lap main for the B Cadets.
Moore continued his ascent to the front of the field when he passed Joiner, Watkinsville’s Buck Williams and a slowing Jeff Carter for third place just before a mid-race caution. Carter slowed and pulled into the pit area during the caution which also saw problems develop for leader Marcus Caswell.
Caswell’s mount stopped on the back stretch during the caution laps and would not refire. Track crews attempted to push start the car, but to no avail. Caswell would drop out of the race ending his modest two race win streak and leaving the door open for Blake Griffin to return to the winner’s circle for the first time since mid-July.
Griffin held the top spot after restarting, but Sam Moore was on a mission. Moore had come from the back of the pack and on lap 12 was able to get alongside Griffin for the lead. Moore and Griffin raced side by side before Moore was able to steal away the top spot.
Moore would cruise over the final laps leaving Griffin in second, Buck Williams in third, Chris Carr in fourth and Michael Lilly fifth. The back to the front victory for Moore was reassuring to the crowd as the race was filled with lots of passing on what has proved to be a very tough, tight, bull ring race track.
“If there is any question about being able to pass at New Senoia Raceway, Sam Moore just showed you how it is done,” said track flagman Chad Harrington. “He proved that you can race the top side as well as the bottom side all night long.”
Those words rang true again for the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock division. Carrollton’s Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran challenged himself before the race began. The twelve race winner opted to start scratch on the field of fourteen cars. Moran had qualified his car for the front row, but decided to start at the rear of the pack after receiving the challenge a week earlier from track announcer Ted Austad.
Newnan’s Rusty ‘Rocketman’ Johnson took the gift and ran as he shot out to the early race lead over Brooks’ Kerry Carden and Mike Jenkins. Locust Grove’s Wilson Boozer and Hogansville’s George Purgason ran fourth and fifth.
The race’s first caution came out when Jenkins got loose exiting the fourth turn. He tried to save it on the front stretch, but spun entering the first turn. Jenkins would have to go to the back of the pack for the restart.
The caution proved to be turning point for the Hobby Stock division as leader Rusty Johnson developed problems and had to go to the pit area. Kerry Carden inherited the lead while Moran would also be among the top five for the restart.
Carden took the green ahead of the ‘Grantville Grenade’ Austin Horton. Moran motored past Boozer and Purgason and set his sights on the top two. Moran shot past Horton on lap seven before another caution came out for debris on the track.
Moran made the most of the opportunity besting Carden on the highside in turn two before powering past and into the lead down the back stretch. Carden would fight for position the rest of the race with Austin Horton. Carden’s streak of runner-up finishes would end after he and Horton tangled down the back stretch.
When the mud stopped flying, Moran had won for an unprecedented thirteenth time this season. Horton was second ahead of Wilson Boozer, Mike Jenkins and Loganville’s Bill Brown.
The special Mini Stock Mania 25-lapper highlighted a great night of racing that also included the vey popular Kids Rides in the Race Cars. Douglasville’s Eric Hogsed moved out to the early race lead over Hogansville’s Tim Collier. LaGrange’s Dusty Jones entered the race with eight feature wins on the season ran third with points leader Dorough Bright of Whitesburg and his nearest points rival Gary Parker of Barnesville battling for fourth.
On a lap three restart, Jones shot past Hogsed to take the lead while Dorough Bright worked past Parker and Collier to snare third place. Bright was using a back-up car after crashing his Mustang a week earlier. This new ride also developed problems. Just as Bright thought he would secure a few more points in the race for the season title, he had to drop to the pit area. For the second straight week, that left the door wide open for Parker.
Parker stared a gift horse in the eyes one week earlier when Dorough Bright dropped from the race after a collision with Senoia’s Robbie Scardon. Parker had overtaken the points lead until the final lap of the feature when he spun in turn one after cutting a tire. This unfortunate turn of events allowed Bright to remain in the points lead by a mere three points heading into this past Saturday night’s race for the Mini Stocks.
Jones would restart the race in front of Hogsed, Parker, Collier and Bo Chambers of Griffin. Chambers had charged up through the field after starting near the tail.
Great racing through the entire field kept the fans entertained. Newnan’s Joe Spencer raced hard with Sharpsburg’s Joshua Blume and Senoia’s Robert Caldwell. Spencer got past Blume and Caldwell one lap before they brought out the final caution of the night crashing in turn one.
On the restart, a final charge to the finish saw the leaders pull away leaving the best race of the night for third place. Tim Collier, Gary Parker and Bo Chambers scrambled for position as the white flag flew for the final lap. Jones and Hogsed would finish first and second, but a crazy turn of events in the final turn would see Collier come home third, Chambers come fourth and Joe Spencer fifth.
For the second straight week, Gary Parker would crash on the final lap of the race. Instead of finishing among the top five and securing the points lead by a solid margin, Parker would finish seventh. He does move into the points lead over Dorough Bright, but his lead is only seven points with three races remaining on the season.
Dusty Jones claimed his ninth win of the year and placed his name in the record books winning the special event for the Mini Stocks. Erik Hogsed ran second, but was very complimentary in post race interviews.
“Dusty Jones is a great driver,” said Hogsed. “You’re gonna see him racing in the top divisions here within the next year or two.”
