It was a great weekend for USCS pilots Jerrod Hull and Brian Bell, as they picked up United Sprint Car Series presented by Goodyear wins at North Alabama and Clayhill, respectively.
The big weekend of racing started out on Friday, as the USCS charged into Tuscumbia, Alambma to do battle at North Alabama Speedway. Hull, from Sikeston, Missouri, scored his second win of the 2011 season during the winged sprint car portion of the 5th annual Night of Thunder racing card. 2008 USCS Mid South Thunder Tour Champion Tim Crawley from Benton, Arkansas, chased Hull the final 18 laps around the high-banked 3/8 red clay oval.
Crawley who was looking for his eighth USCS win of the season couldn’t quite make it happen. Jerrod Hull charges to USCS “Night of Thunder” win at North Alabama
Crawley won the Engler Machine and Tool First Heat Race and accumulated the most passing/qualifying points in the process. He then started the Ward Racing #88 in sixth position after drawing a six in the K&N Filters Pole Award drawing. Hull started the right of K&N Filters Pole position starter, young gun Brian Bell from Cordova, Tennessee in the front row.
After the initial start was called back, Brian Bell charged into the lead in the first turn on the re-start and blasted to the front and with a comfortable lead while enduring several re-starts after early race caution periods on laps two, three and six. On lap eleven while comfortably leading over Hull and Crawley, Bell slipped off the top of the track in turn three after making contact with a lapped car. After surveying the damage to his #23 FSR Racing Products car he was done for the evening.
Hull inherited the point at this time with eighteen laps to go with Crawley, defending series champion Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee, Anthony Nicholson, also from Bartlett and past USCS National champion Eddie Gallagher from Piperton, Tennessee on his rear bumper for the re-start.
Hull held on through another caution on lap-twenty for the win in the thirty-lap contest. Crawley chased him to the finish line in the runner-up spot. Gallagher advanced to third position at the finish. Nine-time USCS Champion Terry Gray followed in the fourth position and Anthony Nicholson rounded out the top five.
Jerod Roller from Hernando, Mississippi led the next group of finishers in sixth place. Derek Hagar from Marion, Arkansas finished seventh. The only female sprint car racer in the field, Morgan Turpen, finished in eighth position. The current 2011 Rookie of the Year point’s leader, Jordon Mallett from Greenbrier, Arkansas finished ninth and another rookie contender, Justin Webb from Drummonds, Tennessee rounded out the top ten finishers.
Crawley kicked off the evening’s sprint car racing program by winning the 6-cars, 6-lap Goodyear USCS Speed Dash. Crawley also won the first heat. Hull won the second heat race, and Roller collected the win in the third heat. Lee Moore from Tuscaloosa, Alabama., was the Wilwood Engineering Hard Charger in the main event. Jordan Mallett from Greenbrier, Arkansas was the Rookie of the Race.
After the trouble he had at North Alabama, young gun Brian Bell from Cordova, Tennessee charged past early race leader Mike Hampton from McKenzie, Tennessee into the lead on lap nine and never looked back on his way to the USCS victory lane to capture his career-first USCS win in the 30-lap United Sprint Car Series presented by Goodyear feature race at Clayhill Motorsports in Atwood, Tennessee on Saturday night.
Bell survived three caution periods on laps eleven, twelve and thirteen before streaking to a full straight-away lead over Jerrod Hull during the final seventeen caution free laps. Bell crossed the finish line in his potent #23 FSR Racing Products winged sprint car ahead of Hull and 2008 USCS Mid-South regional Champion Tim Crawley in third. Hampton held on for his career-best USCS sprint car finish in fourth position. Behind Anthony Nicholson rounded out the top five.
Derek Hagar from Marion, Arkansas finished sixth followed by Jerod Roller, Terry Gray, Morgan Turpen and Jordan Mallett rounded out the top ten.
Nicholson accumulated the most passing/qualifying points in the process. He then started his #16 in sixth position after drawing a six in the K&N Filters Pole Award drawing. This placed Turpen in the K&N Filters Pole Position. Hampton started outside of the front row. Bell started third with Hull outside row two.
Hull kicked off the evening’s sprint car racing program by winning the 6-cars, 6-lap Goodyear USCS Speed Dash. Hull also won the first heat. Bell won the second heat. Roller was the Wilwood Engineering Hard Charger in the main event after he advanced ten positions in the main event. Jordon Mallett was the Rookie of the Race.
