“Racin’ Jason” Williams nailed down his ninth feature win of the season in the Mike Wheeler’s Automotive & Transmission Late Model division on Saturday night at New Senoia Raceway in Senoia, Georgia.
The victory also moved him into the point’s lead for the first time this season as the Locust Grove hot shoe bypassed Phenix City’s Lavon Sparks in the current tally.
Tod Darda picked up his seventh win of the year in the Crown Security Crate Late Model class while Marcus Caswell, Clifton Moran and Dusty Jones also took home top honors during the special double points event at the 3/8ths mile clay oval.
Williams started on the pole after securing his eighth fastest qualifier award for 2011. He was flanked by Joe Armistead, Jr. for the drop of the green. Williams won the drag race to turn one leaving Armistead in a three way tussle for the second place position with Glenn Morris and Shane Fulcher.
Senoia’s Armistead was stuck on the high side as Fayetteville’s Morris moved to the low side. Thomaston’s Fulcher made it three wide out of the second turn as he attempted to sneak through the middle gap. Morris slid by before turn three as Armistead rolled in behind him leaving Fulcher in fourth as the field settled into position.
Lavon Sparks charged up to battle with Shane Fulcher for the fourth place position. The two veteran competitors swapped the spot back and forth three times during the race’s first seven laps before Sparks finally secured the position. Sparks was looking to protect his narrow eight point lead over Williams, who was in a heated race for the lead.
Joe Armistead, Jr. was looking for room to pass Williams as the duo raced through lapped traffic. Williams would slide just high enough in the turns to allow Armistead to get up on his quarter panel, but slammed the door shut on every chance. Both cars were showing signs of tire wear when Armistead’s mount finally let go on lap 21. Armistead’s tires could not hold up to the intense fight for the lead and he slammed the front stretch wall ending his charge to knock Williams from the number one spot.
Williams cruised through the final four laps with Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris finishing a solid second place. Lavon Sparks came home in third and relinquished his season long point’s lead to Williams. The double points night allowed Williams to make up the eight point deficit and move into the lead by four markers over Sparks. The father/son racing team of Shane and Laddie Fulcher rounded out the first five across the finish line.
In the Crown Security Crate Late Models, Tod Darda shot past pole sitter Chase Edge to snare the lead early. The LaGrange driver never looked posting his seventh win of the season. Edge from Lafayette, Alabama would come home second in front of fellow Alabaman Russ Ogletree of Phenix City.
The best race of the night for the Crown Security Crate Late Models was the wild race for fourth place. LaGrange’s Dennis Hale and Grantville’s Doug Ludwig bumped and banged in almost every turn as Ludwig tried to save his tires from heating up on the hard packed clay surface. The abrasive clay was burning rubber off of Ludwig’s right rear and allowed Hale to make a last lap pass to secure the number four spot in the final rundown. Jenkinsburg’s Trey White also charged up on the final lap to nab a top five finish as Ludwig faded with worn out tires.
The Newnan Bonding B Cadet main event was marred by ten cautions. Two pile-ups during initial race start attempts forced a few drivers to the pit area before an official lap was in the books. The race would be slowed several times for spins and crashes including a last lap crash involving the front runners.
Newnan’s Marcus Caswell took over the lead on lap four from Stockbridge’s Jeff Carter which left Lithia Springs’ TJ Joiner in third. Joiner was chasing the leaders to the white flag when he lost control of his race car in turn four sliding down in front of the field. He collected Whitesburg’s Jason Causey, Sharpsburg’s Robert Chandler and Greenville’s Thomas Mewborn as the four car collision blocked the entire front stretch.
When the dust settled, Caswell picked up the laurels followed by Carter. Grantville’s Blake Griffin ended up third as he snuck past the final lap melee. Watkinsville’s Buck Williams and Newnan’s Chris Carr completed the top five.
Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran flexed his muscle in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock division. The Carrollton competitor started in the fourth row, but made a snazzy pass for the lead on the sixth circuit by diving underneath Newnan’s Rusty Johnson and Grantville’s Austin Horton.
Moran showed why he is the man to beat in 2011 posting his season best twelfth win. Brooks’ Kerry Carden and Mike Jenkins ran second and third with Horton settling for fourth. Franklin’s Gary ‘Cornbread’ Brand completed the first five.
The point’s race in the Mini Stocks was close entering the double points event. Whitesburg’s Dorough Bright held a slim seven point lead over Barnesville’s Gary Parker. The two would swap the lead back and forth several times as the fans needed scratch pads to keep track of the ever changing race for the number one spot in the point standings.
LaGrange’s Dusty Jones moved out to the lead early which left most of the drama to the battle between Parker and Bright. Parker ran second to Jones after passing Brandon Bright on lap five. Dorough Bright was in fourth position at that time which gave Parker the points lead. But, the race was not over.
Dorough Bright fought back to third place which moved him one point in front of Parker with six laps remaining. Bright and Senoia’s Robbie Scardon swapped the third place spot back and forth until the ninth lap when Scardon lost it in turn four hitting Bright in the right side door panel as the two headed down the front stretch. Scardon would cause the caution as Bright never lifted and continued on without spinning.
Two laps later Bright and Scardon were battling again with the drivers experiencing a recurring dream when Scardon slid down across the track in turn four slamming Bright in the same door for the second time. Again, Bright never wavered and held his third place position and the slim one point lead over Parker who was still in second.
On the restart, Bright felt a vibration develop in turn one before his right side wheel broke loose in the second turn. Bright’s car launched skyward as it rolled over the loose wheel ending his night. The unfortunate situation also handed the points lead over to Parker who was still chasing down Jones at the front of the field.
But the points scenario was not completed. On the final two laps of the race, Parker started to fade losing second place to Griffin’s Bo Chambers and then third place to Douglasville’s Rocky Johnson. Parker’s points lead ended when he spun on the final lap of the race after cutting a left rear tire. Dusty Jones ran under the checkered flag as Parker sat helpless at the bottom of turn two. Chambers came home second, Johnson was third.
The final tally showed Parker finishing a lap down (never completed the final lap) in sixth place and Dorough Bright in seventh place two laps down. Parker gained four points on Bright, but the points lead remains Bright’s after the wild finish.
The Mini Stocks will headline the show this Saturday, August 20, as the four cylinder stock car division will be highlighted with a 25-lap special event. The extra laps and extra prize money packaged together with an interesting points race should create an exciting night of racing. The Mike Wheeler’s Automotive & Transmission Late Models, Crown Security Crate Late Models, Newnan Bonding B Cadets and Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks will also be competing this weekend.
The Saturday night show will also feature the return of the track’s most popular kid’s activity. Free rides in the race cars for the kids will take place prior to the feature races this Saturday. Parents are invited to bring their kids out for a special ride around the track with their favorite New Senoia Raceway competitor.
