Stephen Nasse had to survive 11 cautions and a late race charge by Colt James to pick up the win Saturday night in the US Auto Sales 100 Pro Late Model feature at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Georgia Saturday night.
“The car was great all night on the long runs,” the 16-year-old said in victory lane. “I was just trying to keep Colt (James) off my back bumper. We had a good green flag run and he fell back a little bit. I got in my comfort zone and just pulled away.”
The real fireworks came late in the race behind Nasse, as Dacula, Georgia’s Russell Fleeman and Dillon Oliver, from Bowling Green, Kentucky, tangled coming to two to go. Both drivers had been fighting hard for position all night, trading positions several times.
Fleeman had passed Oliver in turn three, and Oliver attempted a cross over move in four. As the two came off the fourth turn, Oliver made contact with the left rear of Fleeman’s car, sending Fleeman sliding backwards down the frontstretch. Fleeman made hard contact with the inside wall, ending his night.
But the fireworks weren’t over. Fleeman was visibly angry. He climbed from his car, looking for Oliver as the field passed by. As Oliver passed, a member of Fleeman’s crew came over the wall and threw a piece of equipment at him as he passed.
Fleeman’s night was over. Oliver would finish seventh.
The night started off with a familiar face up front, as Michael Lance, winner of the last Pro Late Model event at GMP, took the early lead, with Dwayne Buggay moving to second and James to third.
The first two cautions of the night flew in rapid succession. On lap four, Jared Foley and Jerick Johnson tangled in turn two, bringing out the first yellow of the night. The second flew just three laps later when Todd Nichelson spun in turn two.
On the restart, James would move into the lead for the first time of the night, with Nasse following him around Lance to move to second. Oliver moved to fourth while Fleeman charged to fifth.
The yellow flag would fly again just before the 25 lap mark, when the cars of Joel Anderson, Stacy Crain and Rodney Benefield tangled in turn four. Anderson and Crain were able to drive away, but Benefield’s night was over.
James would again move out to take the lead on the restart, with Nasse in second, Lance in third and Fleeman in fourth.
Nasse clearly had the fastest car, and was looking for the lead over James when Tyler Edwards rolled to a stop on the backstretch, bringing out another caution.
James would move back out front on the restart, with Nasse back in second and Fleeman moving to third.
Nasse finally got the real estate he was looking for on lap 40, as he moved around James for the lead. He would hold it for the rest of the100 lap event.
A flurry of cautions broke out as the race approached the halfway mark. On lap 42, Scott Patton spun in turn three, bringing out the yellow. Thee laps later, Alexander Fox and Crain tangled in turn two, bringing out another caution.
One lap later, Hal Martin spun in turn one, backing his car into the outside retaining wall, bringing out yet another yellow flag.
As the race finally reached the halfway mark, Nasse held the lead over James, Oliver, Fleeman and Kyle Benjamin.
The race would stay green until lap 68, when a cut tire sent send Dalton Grindle spinning in turn one.
Nasse and James faced off again on the restart, with Nasse moving out to the lead and Fleeman giving chase.
The scariest moment of the night came on lap 78, when Brady Boswell cut a tire going into the third turn. His car hit the wall and got airborne, sliding on the drivers’ side through turn three. The car came down on all fours in the fourth turn. Boswell walked the ambulance under his own power.
Nasse would again move out to a healthy lead on the restart, and was moving away with 20 to go. His charge was halted on lap 87 when Kyle Benjamin looped around off turn two, bringing out the yellow flag again.
Nasse took control again on the restart, with James in second. Oliver and Fleeman jockeyed for position as the laps wound down, and would tangle with two to go bringing out the final caution.
James would hold on for second. Willie Allen finished third, with Jerrod Foley fourth and Dwayne Buggay fifth.
It was a hot night of hot action all the way around – and in more ways than one.
The scariest moment of the night came during the 35 lap Truck feature, when Gary Baker’s truck suffered an engine explosion, resulting in a huge fireball from his truck as he spun off the second turn. Baker was able to scramble from the truck as the GMP rescue unit extinguished the blaze. He was unhurt, and walked away.
Dawsonville, Georgia’s Spencer Davis made a pass on pole sitter Bill Hoose early on to take the lead, and never looked back, as he cruised to his first win at Gresham Motorsports Park. The 12-year-old had to hold off a hard charge by Chris Wagner, who would come home second.
“It’s a real honor,” Davis said of the win. “Everybody good races here. It’s just really cool.”
Jim Wall ran third, with Brandon Jones fourth and Hoose fifth.
In the Outlaw Late Model feature, it looked like David Murphy had the edge early on, jumping out into the lead on the opening lap, with Matthew Wragg and Jason Bates giving chase.
But a yellow flag on lap 24 erased Murphy’s lead, opening the door for Wragg to take the lead on the restart. He would hold that position the rest of the way, picking up the victory.
“We’ve got a good car,” Wragg said after the victory. “I’m real happy with hit. We just have to make a few more little tweaks and then we’ll be even better.”
Hoyt Stephens charged from the back of the pack to finish third, followed by Bates, Murphy and Terry Martin.
In the Sportsman division, Mark Caudell charged past pole sitter Brian Sosebee, and checked out on the field to pick up the win.
“This is my passion,” Caudell said in victory lane. “This is what I call a real, true stock car. It’s a good car to have and a great place to race.”
John Michael Mobley ran second, with Sosebee, Jackie Daniel and Jody Cash rounding out the top five.
Matt Meyer, piloting a car for Ken Candiotti, Sr, made his way past early leader Dustin Stephan to take the lead and move away for the win in the Mini-Stock feature.
“Ken Candiotti had this car running good,” Meyer said. “I appreciate him for letting me drive it. It was fun.”
Stephan finished second, with Aaron Calvert third, Vernon Hicks fourth and Scotty Beck fifth.
After a spirited battle at the drop of the green flag, Tony Newman took the lead over Mike Childers in the Renegade feature, and went on to record the win.
“Tires made the difference,” Newman said after the win. “I put new tires on tonight and that helped a lot.
Childers ran second, with Nathaniel “Boo” Carlisle third and Jesse Thomas fourth.
