Woody Bryant doubled up Saturday at the Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia, winning both the Pro Class and the 7.50 Index class. Five other racers, J.D. “Doc” Burford, Tim Sutton, Stan Sinack, John Hobbs and John Norris, enjoyed winning their class for the second week in a row. Another racer, Jeremy Hancock, also reached two finals, but had to settle for runner-up in each.
Bryant, who hails from Bowman, GA earned first of two wins in the 7.50 Index class. Bryant met Ed Nalley’s Maysville, GA based ’71 Z/28 Camaro in the final, and both racers ran less than one hundredth of a second off the index. Bryant’s ’82 Camaro was on the good side of the index, crossing the win stripe with a 7.508 at 92.06 mph. Nalley actually took the big end stripe first, but broke out with an oh-so-close 7.494 at 90.75 mph. Peter Mansolillo (’80 Monza – Suwanee, GA) continued making rounds, finishing the day in the semi-finals, along with John Norris (’86 Camaro – Royston, GA).
“It’s good to finally win one this season,” Bryant said.
But his day wasn’t over, as Bryant continued the streak with his ’82 Camaro by winning Pro class. Bryant met veteran racer Al Baker’s ’72 Maverick in the final, and used a slightly better react, coupled with a 0.01 over 7.44 at 93.95 mph for the win. Baker’s Marietta, GA based machine crossed the finish line stripe 0.014 seconds later with a 6.53 at 106.00 mph (6.51 dial). Ryan Johnson (’82 Mustang – Pendergrass, GA), earned the semi-finalist portion of the purse.
When his wife Paula mentioned she might not make it to the next weekend’s race, he stated clearly, “We can’t change anything now, including you.” He then handed her both winner’s checks.

Stan Sinack furthered his 6.50 Index class points lead over Jefferson, GA racer Michael Goodwin with another victory in his Lilburn, GA based ’69 Dart. This time he did it with a little better reaction time, and ran a little closer to the 6.50 Index, running 6.54 at 91.32 mph. Goodwin’s ’70 Dart crossed the stripe just behind Sinack, posting a 6.56 at 98.42 mph.
Sean Garner (’89 S-10 Blazer – Oxford, GA) earned the semi-finalist position.
“I hope it keeps on hooking up like it did,” Sinack said. “It was working good today.”

Open Comp Full Body winner John Norris won last week in 7.50 Index with his Royston, GA based ’86 Camaro. He continued the win streak with the Open Comp victory against Jeremy Hancock of Commerce, GA, who was piloting his family’s ’74 Vega. Norris was posted a close, but breakout 7.509 at 89.78 mph pass (7.51 dial), but victory was his the moment Hancock left the starting line 0.017 seconds before the clocks started, leaving the red light glowing on the starting line. Hancock posted a 6.09 at 112.71 mph time (6.18 dial).
Jesse Young (’67 Camaro – Danielsville, GA) and Chad Brewer (’73 Nova – Canton, GA) were the Open Comp semi-final finishers.

Defending Super Pro champ John Hobbs, who won in Open Comp last week, scored a decisive victory with his Conyers, GA based ’71 Vega wagon against Commerce, GA racer Jeremy Hancock’s ’05 Undercover dragster in the Super Pro final. Hancock, the 2009 Super Pro champ, had a decent reaction time and ran a dead-on 4.739 second pass at 146.23 mph, but Hobbs was on top of his game, beginning with a telepathic 0.001 react and ending with a dead-on 6.643 at 101.76 mph, which added up to a 0.004 second package. Phil Owens, the 2010 Division Two champion (’05 M&M dragster – Lithia Springs, GA) was the lone semi-finalist.
“I had to put the track champ out,” Hobbs said. “You have to be on your game against him.”
Two former champs also met in the Sportsman final. J.D. “Doc” Burford from Greenville, SC, the 2009 Sportsman champion, met mentor and friend Mel Abney, the 2010 champ. The reaction times were close, but Burford’s ’07 Corvette prevailed, breaking out less than Abney’s Cumming, GA based ’67 Camaro with a 13.10 at 111.59 mph (13.12 dial). Abney’s Camaro apparently found a little too much traction this time, and broke out more with a 13.20 at 99.82 mph (13.27 dial). Terry Turpin (’11 Mustang – Maysville, GA) finished his day in the semi-final round.
“It was very satisfying to meet Mel in the finals,” Burford said. “He’s taught me everything, and is a great ambassador for the sport.”
Tim Sutton of Clermont, GA returned to the Motorcycle winner’s circle on his ’83 Suzuki for the second time in a row, and third time in 2011. His final round competitor was Jay Rhyne (’81 Kawasaki – Athens, GA). Sutton took advantage of a better react and Rhyne’s slowing 12.52 at 101.18 mph (12.43 dial) to post the winning 9.18 at 136.90 mph (9.11 dial). Howard Bowman (’02 Harley – Homer, GA) ended his day in the semi-final round.
“(Rhyne)’s making me earn those points, 10 at a time,” Sutton said.
